Western’s growth benefits everyone
To the Editor:
This letter is in response to the editorial “Opening of new arts complex is dawn of new era for WCU, region.” I am a business administration and law student here at Western Carolina University and, even though I do not take any art courses here, I think that the new art building is a great thing for students. The majority of majors here are nursing, business or teaching; there are a few art majors but not enough to even hold a light to the others. But with the new art complex, I think that many more students interested in art will come to Western, and current students that have an interest in art but haven’t had the opportunity to act on it can now take art courses. This will give WCU a big opportunity to expand and to become a bigger and better university. As to the writer who is worried about Western putting on “airs,” they don’t need to worry. We will always stay true to our Western North Carolina roots, though getting bigger isn’t a bad thing nor is getting newer classrooms and buildings. People in the community need to understand that if WCU gets bigger that means a bigger economy for the surrounding cities. As much as we love it here in Cullowhee, we sometimes need to go to Wal-Mart or just want to go to eat somewhere in Sylva to get some real food. New amenities can only benefit us, our community and the ones that surround us.
