GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS RAILROAD and ALVIN FRADY are featured in the November issue of Our State magazine. GSMR is on the cover, and another shot inside shows a train passing through the Nantahala Gorge. Frady, chariman of the Jackson County Cemetery Society, led an effort to rescue the old County Home Cemetery from years of neglect. Frady held a rededication ceremony at the cleaned-up cemetery on Oct. 23. The Our State article chronicles Frady’s efforts over the past several years and includes color photographs.
THE FIRST WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA POTTERY FESTIVAL will be this Saturday, Nov. 5, in Dillsboro. The event will include around 20 regional potters displaying and selling their work and will also feature demonstrations of throwing and glazing as well as raku firings all day and one firing in an experimental kiln that produces completed pots in about one-fourth of the normal time. Activities get under way at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. on Dillsboro’s Front Street.
DAISY HENSON OF SYLVA is the final winner in this year’s “Have Dinner on Us” contest that is part of the newspaper’s Great Smokies Dining Guide. Henson won a $25 gift certificate to Speedy’s. Our fall/winter restaurant page begins this week, bringing news of local restaurants that stay open all year. Look for our contest again when the Great Smokies Guide resumes in May.
ANNIE LEE BRYSON AND BRENDA ANDERS will be featured on WLOS-TV’s noon program on Thursday, Nov. 10. Bryson will demonstrate cornshuck dolls on that day’s Crafts Corner, and Anders will be the guest in the “Carolina Cooking” segment. Anders will do a double feature on the show’s Monday, Nov. 21, airing when she’s featured in both “Crafts Corner” and “Carolina Cooking.” Both Bryson and Anders are members of Dogwood Crafters. Another Dogwood member, Cheryl Thompson, was on “Crafts Corner” Oct. 20.

FOR THOSE SEEKING AN ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR’S LICENSE who want to prepare for the state exam, Southwestern Community College has a two-day weekend course to help meet this challenge. The course also provides state-approved continuing education credit for licensed electricians. Electrical Prep for the North Carolina Exam is scheduled Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 13, at the SCC Macon Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost for this self-supporting course is $275; the National Electric Code book is $60. Each screening requires ten minutes or less to complete. FIRST CITIZENS BANK in Sylva picked two winners from the children who drew fall pictures during the bank’s recent customer appreciation day. Both kindergartners David Conlin of Cullowhee Valley Elementary School and Kelly Morgan of Fairview Elementary School were awarded $50 U.S. savings bonds. Conlin is the son of Holly and Scott Conlin of Cullowhee, and Morgan is the daughter of Kirsten and Ralph Morgan of Webster. |
