Owens, Falcons run wild in win over Smoky Mountain
Quinten Owens carried 24 times for 255 yards and five touchdowns leading West Henderson to a 46-28 Western Athletic Conference football victory Friday at West.
The Falcons didn’t complete a pass all night, but they didn’t have to. They ran at will and compiled 456 yards while not having to punt in the game.
David Arrowood added 79 yards in nine attempts.
The Mustangs (0-4, 1-9) scored all of their points in the second half. The teams combined for five touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Three SM passers combined to throw for 159 yards. Matt Hawkins was seven of 11 for 58 yards and a TD while Jared Jones was three of seven for 67 yards and a score.
Cory Siler completed a 34-yard TD pass in his only attempt while carrying 11 times for 38 yards.
The Mustangs picked up a couple of first downs on the game’s opening possession to reach West territory before Arrowood recovered Hawkins’ fumble at the 27. Two plays later, Owens started to his left, reversed field and raced 71 yards to paydirt. Carter Macomson, who was four of six on extra points, made it 7-0 with 7:32 left in the first quarter.
On the first play after a punt, Owens was trapped behind the line of scrimmage after recovering his own fumble. He some how escaped and turned the play into a 43-yard gain. That led to his 3-yard scoring run for a 14-0 advantage with 2:47 to go in the opening period.
Jacob McMinn intercepted a Hawkins pass at the Falcon 37, but SM got the ball back when Siler picked off Sean Jones’ pass and had a 22-yard return to his 45.
Following an SM punt, the teams again exchanged turnovers. Siler came up with another interception, this one of a James Johnson pass at the Mustang 12.
The Falcons regained possession at the SM 27 when Josh Kirbo recovered Zack Watson’s fumble.
Owens scored from the 2 eight plays later. Dayne Bowers blocked the extra point leaving West on top 20-0 with 1:33 to play in the half.
The Falcons drove 80 yards in seven plays following the second-half kickoff. Arrowood had an 18-yard run with Owens taking a pitch and racing the final 41 yards. A conversion run failed keeping West on top 26-0 with 9:06 remaining in the third stanza.
Siler had a 35-yard kickoff return to midfield setting the stage for the Mustangs to get on the board. A 33-yard pass from Hawkins to Tyler Clarke helped overcome a penalty, and Siler had a 10-yard run. Hawkins completed the eight-play march with a 2-yard pass to T.J. Bradley. Grant Schallock kicked the first of his four extra points cutting the gap to 26-7 with 5:49 to play in the third quarter.
SM tried an onside kick, but Daniel Holbert recovered at the Falcon 42. Runs of 22 yards by Arrowood and 13 yards by Owens keyed the six-play drive that culminated in Owens’ 3-yard run for a 33-7 lead with 3:01 to go in the third period.
Runs of 14 yards by Siler and 10 yards by Dillon Dunford keyed a 74-yard march in eight plays. Siler’s 34-yard tailback pass to Hawkins trimmed the deficit to 33-14 with 11:52 to play.
Holbert again recovered an onside kick, this one at his 48. Arrowood had a 6-yard gain on fourth-and-2 from the 44. Arrowood capped the eight-play march with an 11-yard run upping the margin to 40-14 at the 7:55 mark.
The Mustangs converted on a pair of fourth downs during a 63-yard drive that took nine plays. Kellen Bewsey gained a yard on fourth-and-1 from the West 39. On fourth-and-20, Jones unloaded a 48-yard scoring pass to Dunford for a 40-21 margin with 4:46 on the clock.
The third time proved to be the charm for SM regarding onside kicks as Jack Cooper recovered the ball at his 40. Following a pair of sacks, the Mustangs yielded possession on downs at the 28.
West needed just two plays to score as Justin Allen had a 24-yard run increasing the lead to 46-21 at the 3:01 mark as the PAT failed.
The Mustangs concluded the scoring with 2:16 on the clock on Nick Zoda’s 43-yard run. It came one play after he gained 20 yards.
