Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Junior Anders

Alfred James “Junior” Anders, 75, of Dills Branch Road, Sylva, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Nov. 3) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Ricky Conner and Gerald Conner officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Parris Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Scott, Tony Scott, Daniel Scott, Jamie Scott, Charlie Conner, Jerry Scott and Carroll Bradley.

Honorary pallbearer will be Ben Conner.

A native of Transylvania County, he had lived in Jackson County for the last 34 years. He retired from Suburban Propane as a service technician. He was a son of the late Capp and Rose Owen Anders.

He was also preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Surviving are three daughters, Karen Peavey of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Carolyn Redburn and Angela Conner, both of Sylva; two sons, Larry Anders of Merritt Island, Fla., and Gary Anders of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Exie Whitmire of Brevard, Ada Andrews of Maryland and Ella Mae Searcy of Canton; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Ed Manring

James Edward “Ed” Manring, 77, of Archdale, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, Nov. 3) at Cornerstone Baptist Church in High Point with Dr. Rodney Otwell and the Rev. Ronnie Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

He was born July 6, 1928, in Stokes County, and lived most of his life in High Point. He retired after 37 years as a lineman and serviceman for Duke Power Company. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. A former deacon and trustee, he was a charter member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Arthur Johnson Manring and Elsie Sams Manring.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Magdalene Dunbar Manring; three sons, Jim Manring of Waynesville, formerly of Sylva, Wayne Manring of Archdale and Mike Manring of Asheboro; one daughter, Debbie Manring Brown of Midlothian, Va.; five sisters, Ruby, Margie, Gracie, Faye and Janie; four brothers, R.J., Bill, Joe and David; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church Building Fund, 1110 N.C. Hwy. 62 West, High Point, NC 27263.

Ted Mull

Virgil Edward “Ted” Mull, 81, of Skyland Drive, Sylva , died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Gerald Morris and David Burch officiating. Burial was in Addie Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tom Flesch, Tim Mathis, Bill Shuler, Carol Henson, Kenny Shuler and B.T. Green.

He was a member and deacon of Buff Creek Baptist Church. He was a salesman for Tom’s Peanut Co., a produce salesman and truck driver, and ended his working career in 1994 as a Jackson County school bus driver.

He was preceded in death by his birth parents, George and Rosa Mull Mathis; his adopted parents, Raymond and Essie Mull; four sisters, Cordie Mathis, Ardell Carpenter, Sarah Blanton and Mary Henry; and three brothers, Joe, Vance and Henry Mathis.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Virginia Fisher Mull; one daughter, Susan Mull Bumgarner of Waynesville; one sister, Blanch Greenarch of Waynesville; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons.



Dennis England

Dennis B. “Papaw” England, 89, of Pontiac, Mich., died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Coats Funeral Home in Waterford, Mich. Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Thomas Memorial Cemetery in Whittier with his son-in-law Mike Houston officiating. Military rites were conducted by the William E. Dillard American Legion Post.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, during which he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from General Motors Truck and Coach after 29 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Ernestine; one son, Jamie England of Jenkins, Ky.; two daughters, Cathy Norris of Flint, Mich., and Karen Houston of Lake Orion, Mich.; three sisters, Neva Black of Illinois, Loris Edmonds of North Carolina and Nezzie Myrgo of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720; or the National Parkinson’s Foundation, 1501 North West 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.

Albert DeRico

110305dericoAlbert P. DeRico, 89, of Deltona, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, in Orlando, Fla.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in the chapel of Baldauff Family Funeral Home in Orange City, Fla. Interment was in Deltona Memorial Gardens in Orange City.

He was born in Carolina, R.I., on Jan. 7, 1916, and was a retired sales representative. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was a member of St. Clare’s Catholic Church in Deltona, and was a charter member of the Elks Lodge in Deland, Fla. He was a son of the late James and Angelina Leonetti DeRico.

Surviving are two sons, James DeRico of Sylva and Danny DeRico of Deltona; two sisters, Florence Malafronte of Norwich, Conn., and Caroline Riley of Deltona; one brother, Romeo DeRico of Norwich; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Bessie Baldwin

Bessie Verlene Baldwin, 88, of Hudson, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the chapel of Pendry’s Funeral Home in Lenoir, with the Revs. James Hamby and Wade Dellinger officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Spencer Breedlove, Bud McLean, Bo McLean, Tracy Hamby, Billy Lovins and Willie Coffey.

She was born Oct. 9, 1917, in Caldwell County and was a member of Hudson First Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Lawrence Bowman and Maggie Gragg Bowman.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eulice C. Baldwin; and several brothers and sisters.

Surviving are two sons, Eulice Clyde Baldwin Jr. of Hickory and Billy Ray Baldwin of Cullowhee; three daughters, Eula Dean McNeil and JoAnne Cable, both of Hudson, and Berniece Metcalf of Athens, Ga.; one brother, Thomas Bowman of Lenoir; two sisters, Hazel Blevins and Glennie McNeil, both of Lenoir; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Glenn Ward

William Glenn Ward, 82, of Canton, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Ruff officiating. Burial was in Bon-A-Venture Cemetery.

He was a native of Jackson County, but lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He was a carpenter and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5198 and American Legion Post 47. He was a son of the late W. Glenn Ward Sr. and Carrie Buchanan Ward.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Polly Wolffer.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Violet Murr Ward; one daughter, Glena Stiles of Candler; one son, William Richard Ward of Asheville; two sisters, Nell Warren of Sylva and Patsy Karkosky of Texas; three brothers, Jimmy Ward of Sylva, Darnell Ward of Germany and Edward Ward of Florida; and two granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 23 Phillips St., Canton, NC 28716; or Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Dr., Clyde, NC 28721.
