Brotherton places third at regionals

Smoky Mountain’s Travis Brotherton earned all-region honors by placing third in the Western 2-A Cross Country Regionals held Saturday at Freedom.

Brotherton posted a personal-best time of 15:51 to qualify for the state meet set for Saturday at Tanglewood near Winston-Salem.

“It was a good meet for most everyone on the team,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “It was a fairly flat course. Travis ran well, particularly coming off an ankle injury. This is the fourth year in a row he has qualified for the state meet.”

Completing SM’s top five were:

Anthony Stephens, 58th, 18:43; Trey Franks, 88th, 20:15; Grayson Cooper, 94th, 20:30; and John Cody, 112th, 22:40.

The Mustangs finished 13th out of 18 teams.

Cadence Railsback led the Lady Mustangs as she was 22nd in 21:16. Rounding out SM’s top five were:

Victoria Palmer, 57th, 23:21; Molly Collins, 60th, 23:35; Emily Butcher, 68th, 24:21; and Katie Hayes, 70th, 24:31.
