SM booters shut out North

Smoky Mountain scored two goals a minute apart in the first half on the way to a 3-0 Western Athletic Conference soccer victory at North Henderson on Oct. 19.

The game was much closer than SM’s 8-0 win the first time the teams met.

“We weren’t eight goals better the first time,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “We knew they had a lot to prove, and it was their Senior Night.”

Another factor he pointed to is the North field being 15 yards wider than most fields.

“That’s the widest field we’ve ever played a game on,” he said. “They’re used to it, and we’re not.”

The Mustangs (4-3-1, 12-5-2) broke a scoreless tie on Grant Schallock’s goal at the 26:35 mark.

“The ball had gotten knocked around a little bit,” Brown said. “Grant rebounded it 10 yards out and ripped it in.”

Just less than a minute later, Nils Sager put SM up 2-0 with an assist from Martin Davis.

“The ball was played from Martin to Nils, who turned with it and shot from 12 yards out,” the coach said.

Schallock scored again at the 74:30 mark to account for the final. The play started with a Joey Cox corner kick with the ball hitting off a couple of players before Schallock drilled it home from 12 yards out.

The Mustangs had a 17-7 advantage in shots. SM’s Sterling Brady had five saves while Michael Wuttke made seven for the Knights.

The Mustang JVs improved to 8-3-1 with a 10-0 romp as Keller Berry and Cort Smith both recorded a hat trick. Wyatt Danner, Dylan Haynes, Eli Corwin and Noah Gallinger all had one goal. John Brown provided four assists, and Ian Youmans added two. Gallinger, Adam Ray and Daniel Ferguson all had one.

“The players played with great flow and creativity,” Coach Stephan Delor said. “We put a practice session in action during the game and got great help off the bench.”
