Richard Reynolds
Richard M. Reynolds, 69, of Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.
He was born in Riverside, Calif., and moved to Sylva after retiring as United States marshal in Muskogee, Okla., following 35 years of government service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a member of American Legion Post 104 and was active in the Republican Party. He was a son of Rene Devine of Oceanside, Calif., and the late Fred Reynolds.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Dora; one sister, Maureen Akers of Reno, Nev.; one son, Marvin Reynolds of Midlothian, Va.; three daughters, Bernadette Reynolds of Wiley, Texas, and Teresa Ellis of Barboursville, W.Va., and Sylvia Deal of Port Orange, Fla.; three stepsons; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Louise Gibson
Louise Edwards Gibson, 88, of Allens Branch Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Sylva First Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Dr. John Bunn and Dr. Wayne Hill officiating. Burial will be in Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, Oct. 28, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. A native of Macon County, she had lived in Jackson County for the last 55 years. She retired form Jackson Savings Bank and was a charter member of the First Families of Old Buncombe. She was a member of the Halcyon Club and served in the Signal Corps for the War Department. She was a daughter of the late Absolom “Absie” Joshua and Daisy Anna Baldwin Edwards.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Gibson, who died in 1966; two brothers, Robert L. and John W. Edwards; and two sisters, Luella Smith and Betty Jean Jennings.
Surviving are two daughter, Janet Gibson Becker of Silver Springs, Mass., and Deanne Gibson Roles of Franklin; four sisters, Gladys Tallent and Wilma Roper, both of Franklin, Allia Burrell Mack of Brevard and Delma Jean Starback of Arlington, Va.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Virginia Kotila
Virginia Kotila, 86, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, in a local nursing home after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with Mr. Blackwell of the Christian Science Church of Franklin and the Rev. Dan Stiles officiating. Burial was in Lewis Cemetery in Asheville.
She had lived in Sylva for the last 40 years and was a member of the Christian Science Church of Franklin. She was a daughter of the late P.B. Butler and Adalaide Cornwell Butler.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell Kotila; and one son, Alan Kotila.
Surviving are three sons, Dean Kotila, Ken Kotila and Jim Kotila, all of Sylva; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Emma Lou Sumner
Emma Lou Potts Sumner, 68, of Potts Community Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at her residence after a brief illness.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Adam Vernon, Scott Cortney and Jim Dean officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens at a later date.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She enjoyed cooking and traveling. She was formerly a Realtor with Country Classic Real Estate, serving as the rental manager and was a substitute teacher for Jackson County Schools. She was a 1954 graduate of Webster High School. She was a member of Webster Methodist Church, where she was secretary, and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a daughter of the late James Hubert Sr. and Minnie Henson Potts.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ben Sumner; one sister, Ruth Parris; and three brothers, James Hubert Potts Jr., Bill Potts and Harold Potts.
Surviving are two daughters, Lisa Cunningham and Susan Coggins, both of Sylva; one son, Tommy Sumner of Sylva; two sisters, Frances Penland of Sylva and Jean Ann Beaty of Parkland, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

Carmen Farley
Carmen Farley, 85, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Morris Tippett officiating. Burial was in Lower Coward Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dustin Shuler, Kenny Wood, Tom Frazier, Don Hensley, Jeff Manka and Don Bellflower.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, and a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star’s East LaPorte Lodge 206. She was a member of Jackson County 4-H, and had received several awards and honors from the group. She was a leader and teacher in the National Youth Administration and was employed by the Jackson County School System as an educator. She was a daughter of the late Ben and Frances Parker Nicholson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Farley, who died in 1987; and two sisters, Leah Taylor and Dallas Ward.
Surviving are two daughters, Zelda Hanson of Dublin, Ga., and Linda Shuler of Sylva; two sisters, Daphna Brown of Pisgah Forest and Selma Stribling of Brevard; and two grandchildren.
Martha Heatherly
Martha Josephine Mathis Heatherly, 87, of Asheville, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at the John F. Deever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Addie Cemetery with the Rev. Gerald Morris officiating.
She was born in Jackson County on July 13, 1918, but lived in Asheville all of her adult life. She was a daughter of the late Rufus and Amanda Mathis.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer Heatherly; one son, Bobby Heatherly; three brothers, Adam, Ollis and Alvin; one sister, Dovie Chesney; and one half brother, Jim.
Surviving are one sister, Lois Foster of Greer, S.C.; three half brothers, Rufus, Bill and Theadore, all of Balsam; five half sisters, Lillie Mae Shuler of Sylva, Audrey Mull of Asheville, Hazel Rich of Waynesville, Rosetta Harris of Lexington and Ethel Mathis of Balsam.

Michael Norman
Michael Henford Norman, 29, of Sylva’s Old Settlement community, died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 27) at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. David Souderes, Clifford Parker, Derrick Frady and Shane Danner officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he worked for almost eight years at Webster Enterprises as a machine operator until his health declined. He was a son of Henford Lee “Tater” and Mildred Marie Franks Norman of Sylva.
He was also preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jimmy Franks and Wilburn Norman.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, James Nathan and Mark Anthony Norman, both of Sylva; maternal grandmother, Margaret Franks of Franklin; and paternal grandmother, Louise Norman of Sylva.

Mary Bumgarner
Mary Battle Bumgarner, 94, of Sylva, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Burial was in Bumgarner Cemetery in Whittier.
Pallbearers were Jeff Bryson, Randy Ledford, Gary Boyer, Critt Shook, Troy Spears, Donovan Pittman and Scott Boyer.
She was a lifelong resident of Jackson County, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and working crossword puzzles. She was a member of Wilmot Baptist Church, and a graduate of Asheville Normal Teachers College and Western Carolina University. She was a teacher in schools in Jackson and Swain counties from the age of 21 and retired in 1973. She was a member of the N.C. Association of Educators and the N.C. Retired Teachers Association. She was a daughter of the late James E. Battle and Maggie Parks Battle.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Burton Bumgarner; three brothers; and one sister.
Surviving are one son, James G. Bumgarner of Morganton; two daughters, Shelba A. Bumgarner of the home and Melena B. Sherrill of Whittier; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Sterling Hensley
Sterling Hensley, 81, of West Rogers Road, Cullowhee, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Robert Stiles officiating. Burial was in Balsam Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Mathis, Dee Mull, Charles Mathis, Doug Mathis and Clinton Mathis.
Honorary pallbearer was Darrell Bryson.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired corrections officer for the N.C. Department of Corrections. He was a son of the late L.J. and Lonie Sitton Hensley.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Mathis Hensley, who died in 1957; his second wife, Eunice Bryson Hensley, who died in 2002; four brothers, Calvin, Bradley, Willie Monroe and Ruben Hensley; and three sisters, Leatha Mull, Elnora Hoyle and Susie Hensley.
Surviving are two daughters, Gayle Boyd of Martin, Tenn., and Karen Monteith of Sylva; one son, L.Z. Hensley of Mount Vernon, Ind.; two sisters, Lucille Mathis of Sylva and Dessie Wright of High Point; one brother, Mack Hensley of Sylva; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
