Mustangs go for bid in 2-A soccer playoffs
Smoky Mountain’s soccer team improved its chances of being one of the Western Athletic Conference representatives in the state 2-A playoffs Monday with a 4-0 victory over West Henderson at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
Details of the game will be in next week’s Herald.
The Mustangs are tied with East Henderson for third in the WAC at 5-3-1. The top three teams will qualify for the post season.
SM needed a win Wednesday at last-place Pisgah (0-9) and have first-place Brevard (8-1) defeat East. Results of those games were not known at press time.
If the Mustangs finish third, they would be at home on Wednesday, Nov. 2, against a wild card team.
Even if they don’t clinch the third spot, their overall record, now 13-5-2, could be enough to earn a wild card spot. Four wild cards, teams with the best record not otherwise qualifying for the playoffs, will receive post season bids in the Western half of the bracket. In that case, SM would likely travel to face a team from the Mountain Valley Conference.
