Mustangs battle to OT tie with Eagles
Smoky Mountain and East Henderson battled to a scoreless overtime tie in a Western Athletic Conference soccer game on Oct. 17 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
“It was just a hard-fought game,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “Both teams had opportunities.”
The Eagles had the best chance late in the second overtime.
“I’ve never seen anybody miss a shot like that,” Brown said. “Our keeper and another player were on the ground, and they had two guys on the ground. They had a player inside the goalie box with the ball in front of him. He wanted to make the highlight film, and the ball went straight up.”
A referee told Brown after the game that the ball would have rolled into the net had the East player not kicked it.
He noted the Mustangs had a couple of chances to score themselves but credited the East keeper with making some outstanding plays, including one late in regulation.
East had a 17-13 edge in shots. SM’s Sterling Brady made 13 saves, and Drake Branson had nine for the Eagles.
“Both keepers made some excellent plays,” Brown said.
“It was a great game for the fans,” he said. “I think there were eight cards given.”
Five Eagle players and their coach received yellow cards while two Mustang players were carded.
SM won the JV game 4-2. Keller Berry scored twice while Cort Smith and Noah Gallinger each had a goal. John Brown and Gallinger provided assists.
“It was exceptional team play,” Coach Stephan Delor said. “The boys played smart and strong. We had good through balls and good finishing.”
