Defending champions defeat Lady Mustangs

Two-time defending state 2-A volleyball champion West Henderson wrapped up another Western Athletic Conference championship with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-13 victory over Smoky Mountain on Oct. 18 at the SM gym.

The Lady Mustangs might have won either of the first two games if not for a season-low serving percentage of 70.6.

After falling behind early, SM cut the gap to 11-8 in the first game after three points by Kelli Woodard and Brittany Gilbert’s kill. The Lady Falcons maintained the lead the rest of the game.

West went up 7-4 in game two, and the Lady Mustangs weren’t able to catch up.

The Lady Falcons shot to a 7-1 lead in the third game. SM’s best runs were three points, including an ace, by Gilbert making it 8-4 and three points, including an ace, by Amy Haggard along with Jennifer Webb’s kill for a 23-13 margin.

Amy Haggard had six kills and 12 digs. Sarah Haggard handed out 16 assists.

Colleen Davis didn’t miss in eight serves, and Cassie Randle got her lone serve in. Amy Haggard was tops in service points with seven.

“It’s hard to play against a team as good as West is, but we hung in there,” assistant coach Lauren Riggan said.

A match scheduled the previous day at Asheville was not played due to a conflict with two team members riding in the homecoming parade.
