Brotherton places fifth at WAC Meet

Smoky Mountain’s Travis Brotherton earned all-conference honors by finishing fifth in the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Meet held last Thursday at West Henderson.

Brotherton, who is nursing an injured ankle, had a time of 17:27 in the race with 48 runners.

Victoria Palmer, the top runner for the Lady Mustangs, did not compete due to an ankle injury.

“The kids ran well,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “A lot of them set personnel records. It was a downer for Travis and Victoria to be dealing with bum ankles.”

Completing the top five for the SM men were:

Bryan McManus, 18th, 19:37; Anthony Stephens, 19th, 19:40; Trey Franks, 29th, 20:30; and Grayson Cooper, 39th, 22:09.

West Henderson won the meet with 25 points followed by Brevard (42), North Henderson (94), SM (105), East Henderson (116) and Pisgah (143).

Cadence Railsback led the Lady Mustangs as she was 19th among 45 runners in 23:16. Molly Collins was 23rd in 24:06 followed by Emily Butcher (27th, 25:33), Katie Hayes (28th, 25:44) and Emily Cowan (45th, 34:46).

North Henderson took the team title with 27 points followed by West Henderson (33), Brevard (65), and SM (107). Pisgah and East Henderson did not have enough runners to qualify for team standings
