WCU student stabbed in wake of football argument
By Lynn Hotaling
A Western Carolina University student was seriously injured by another WCU student last week (Oct. 12).
According to papers on file at the Jackson County Clerk of Court Office, Evan Lee Caltrider, 21, of Laurel Oaks Apartments in Cullowhee was charged with assault with intent to kill following the early morning stabbing of Matthew William Jameson, 22.
Jameson was stabbed during an argument over whether the Green Bay Packers would advance to this year’s NFL playoffs, according to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Sgt. Matt Helton and Deputy Andy Parker investigated the incident and made the arrest, Lillard said. They were assisted by Sgt. John Fox and officers with the WCU Police Department.
Alcohol was involved in the altercation, Lillard said, and both Caltrider and Jameson had been drinking.
While the two were arguing at Jameson’s apartment, Caltrider got behind Jameson and cut his throat with a folding knife. Caltrider left the scene, but officers were able to identify him and subsequently arrest him.
Jameson was taken to Harris Regional Hospital where he was treated and released. His injury was described as serious but was not life-threatening because the knife missed major arteries, Lillard said.
Caltrider was released from custody after posting a $50,000 bond, Lillard said.
