Undefeated Enka downs SM spikers

For the second time this season, Smoky Mountain’s volleyball team took undefeated Enka to five games, but the Sugar Jets emerged with a 25-19, 17-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-9 win on Oct. 10 at Enka.

“We can always play better, but we played a decent match,” Coach Tonya Snider said. “Enka is an excellent team, and we’re one of the few teams to go five games with them. In some ways, that’s an accomplishment in itself. Still, it’s always disappointing to walk away with a loss.”

The Lady Mustangs held a 7-2 lead in the first game after three points from Brittany Gilbert and two blocks by Jennifer Webb. Enka moved in front at 15-11 and led the rest of the game.

Kelli Woodard’s four points and Amy Haggard’s kill put SM up 10-5 in the second game. Four more points from Woodard and two Gilbert kills put the margin at 24-16 before the game ended on a side out.

Cassie Randall served four points, including two aces, for a 16-16 tie in game three. Colleen Davis served the last three points with the game ending on Woodard’s kill.

Sarah Haggard served the first five points of the fourth game with Webb providing a kill. Enka drew even at 6-6, and the game stayed close until the Sugar Jets finished it with a 9-2 run.

Enka took an 8-5 lead in game five and stayed in control the rest of the way.

Sarah Haggard led in service points with 12 and served 90.9 percent. Amy Haggard was perfect in eight serves. Davis served 92.9 percent. Team serving was 85.4 percent.
