Two suspects remain in custody after multiple break-ins at Uncle Bill’s Flea Market early Tuesday morning (Oct. 18).
Three officers with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office – Sgt. Chip Beegle and Deputies Scott Holder and Jamie Ashe – investigated a call involving a suspicious vehicle at the flea market, according to Capt. Steve Lillard.
While they were en route, they received word that the vehicle – a white pickup truck – had left the scene. They then began searching for the truck but were soon notified it was back at Uncle Bill’s, Lillard said.
Upon arriving at the scene, the officers found the empty truck and began searching for the two men who were said to have been in it, Lillard said.
Gregory Thomas Young, 19, of Conover, and Travis Laverne Smith, 18, of Marble were located at the rear of the flea market complex, and the officers determined the men had been breaking into several shops. Both were arrested and remain in jail in lieu of $25,000 bonds.
Young and Smith took a variety of miscellaneous items, Lillard said, and appeared to be planning to re-sell the merchandize.
The four businesses they stole from are A&J Gifts, Uncle Bill’s Flea Market, Malfunction Junction and Import 99C Wholesale, Lillard said.
Both Young and Smith face charges of three counts of felony breaking and entering, three counts of larceny and possession of stolen goods, Lillard said.
