ATTENTION TEACHERS: City Lights will host Teachers’ Night on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. The event will feature the newest in children’s and young adult literature, presented by children’s bookseller and former teacher Jenifer Ross. CITY LIGHTS will also host a party celebrating the release of the 12th book in the popular children’s book series by Lemony Snicket on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. The series is called “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” and the newest volume is titled “The Penultimate Peril.” For more information on Saturday’s event, call the store at 586-9499.
DEMOCRATIC WOMEN of Jackson County will host a reception for Heath Shuler, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. at the Justice Center.
THE MARCH OF DIMES is sponsoring Bingo for Babies on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Savannah Community Center from 6 until 9 p.m. Cost will be $1 per game. Prizes will be awarded, and concessions will be available.

SHANE DANNER called and asked us to thank everyone who helped make the Scotts Creek Elementary School fall festival a resounding success. Proceeds from the evening exceeded $14,500. “Oh behalf of the faculty, staff, students, and PTA at Scotts Creek, we’d like to thank all the individuals, organizations and businesses that made our event successful,” Danner said.
SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND will continue at Balsam Mountain Inn with a Saturday, Nov. 12, appearance by Jerry Vandiver, Tim Buppert and Karyn Rochelle. The Songwriters session is in the inn’s 100-seat restaurant and is accompanied by a gourmet dinner buffet. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. Cover charge is $7 per person, plus dinner charge (about $25). Reservations are encouraged as most sessions sell out. INFORMATION in the Oct. 13 edition of The Sylva Herald about pageant contestant Rebecca DeHart of Sylva was incomplete. The report should have said DeHart was first runner-up in the “Best Thank-you Note Category.”
