Then and now

The “Barkers Creek Straight” on U.S. 74/441 as it looked around 1925 (top photo) and earlier this week (lower photo). Information with the older photo indicates the shot was taken looking west from “Highway 10” and that the photo shows the S.C. Allison farm. Several of the buildings are still standing and have been incorporated into the modern commercial enterprises that line the busy four-lane that now connects Sylva with Cherokee, Bryson City and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
