By Lynn Hotaling

102005mathesonA Sylva man was arrested after being found with drugs early Monday morning (Oct. 17).

Sgt. Matt Helton of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 2 a.m. call concerning a suspicious vehicle at Top Cat Grocery, according to Capt. Steve Lillard.

When he arrived, he found the driver, Victor Ralph Matheson, 43, of Franks Creek Road apparently unconscious, Lillard said. Helton then knocked on the car window and roused Matheson, who couldn’t provide provide Helton with an adequate explanation of why he was there, Lillard said.

Helton asked for and received permission to search the vehicle, according to Lillard. He found 1.5 ounces of marijuana and 12 grams of methamphetamine. Helton also seized $1,307 in cash.

Helton was assisted by Deputy David Lovedahl.

Matheson was arrested and remained in jail as of Tuesday afternoon in lieu of a $15,000 bond.

He faces charges of possession with intent to sell/deliver meth; possession of drug paraphernalia; felony possession of marijuana; possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana and possession of methamphetamine, Lillard said.
