Submitting News:
To submit a news tip, story, letter to the editor, or anything news related, send an e-mail to news@thesylvaherald.com. Do not send information as attachments. Copy and paste the text of your document into the text of the email. (i.e. Don’t send a press release as a .DOC/Word Document, copy and paste the information from the document into the e-mail) Please read additional information at the bottom of this page about deadlines. Letters to the Editor that are e-mailed must include pertinent information such as name, address, and a telephone number for contact. Omitting any of this information may result in the letter not being published.
Submitting Photos:
We accept a variety of photographic formats for publication in our newspaper. Most submissions are made in photographic prints from 35mm cameras. If you bring in a print, include your name and a contact number on the back of the print, so we can properly identify it. Write very lightly with a non-ball point pen so it doesn’t emboss the photo.
Images that are dark in nature do not print or reproduce well. We have the capability to lighten images and improve upon contrast, but dark images generally won’t print well. That’s why proper exposure is essential. See examples below.

Images that are high in contrast where the sun has washed out part of a person’s face don’t reproduce well on newsprint. Avoid shooting pictures of people in direct sunlight, as the shadow that the sun casts will most likely divide a person’s face into half-darkness. If possible, shoot an image in subdued sunlight, earlier in the morning or in mid afternoon. Images that are blurry also don’t reprint well in the newspaper. If you are getting a blurry image, one cause might be too slow of a film. If you’re outdoors on a bright sunny day - use 100 speed film, on a cloudy day - 200 speed film, indoors - 400 speed film, or at night - 800 speed film. This is one of the ways to help prevent blurry pictures. Also, the use of a flash/strobe may improve blurry images.
Also, DO NOT use the Kodak Picture Maker to enlarge an image to give to us for publication. While the Kodak Picture Maker makes good quality reprints, the copies don’t scan well for publication. Provide us with an original; after the issue comes out that week, you’re able to come by and pick the photo up. We get a much better image from an original rather than a copy of the original. We are able to zoom in and crop the part of the image we need to use for a feature.
Digital Guidelines (Read Carefully):
Generally, Ink Jet prints or prints on personal home printers will NOT be accepted for publication due to poor reproduction in the newspaper -- despite whether its printed on plain or photo paper. We prefer all digital images come in the form of e-mail or CD (compact disc). Preferred specifications are 300 DPI (dots per inch) TIFF’s. Images smaller than 1MB (megabyte) usually don’t reproduce well. We need high-resolution photos for press. E-mail the photo(s) to photos@thesylvaherald.com and include any pertinent information, such as name, contact info, or any attention-to info.
If you’re taking a digital picture for publication in our newspaper, set your camera on the highest quality, lowest compression. This means you’ll greatly reduce the number of images you can fit on the memory card. Your digital camera should be 3 Megapixels or greater (we’ll accept images that are 1600x1200 pixels, provided they don’t need to be cropped and enlarged) Get as close to the subject as possible, because if we have to crop the image to zoom in on the subject, it will reduce the image quality. Images that look small on the screen when zoomed in, all the way, also don’t reproduce well.
Also, we can’t use images from web sites unless they are high resolution. Most images that are on the web are saved at 72 DPI (dots per inch) instead of the higher quality 300 DPI which is required for press.
If an image is copyrighted, then we will need a copyright release along with the photo. This doesn’t apply to most situations. Most likely your photographer will release the image to you for publication in a newspaper. Just check with the copyright holder/photographer.
If you have any questions, feel free to send an e-mail to photos@thesylvaherald.com
