Evelyn Barker
Evelyn McDowell Barker, 57, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, October 15, 2005, at Pardee Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, at Hendersonville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Sam Boyd officiating. Burial was in Crab Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, she graduated cum laude from Western Carolina University in 1969 and was a national recipient of the 4-H Full Scholarship. She taught home economics at West Henderson High School for more than six years and was a former member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority. She was a district advisor for Future Homemakers of America and was a recipient of the Stanton Proctor Award for Home Economics Teachers presented by WCU. She was also formerly a realtor with Beverly-Hanks and Associates and was currently serving as vice president of Barker Construction and Well Drilling. She was a former member of the Board of Directors and a two-time past president of the Hendersonville Home Builders Association and a former member of the Proposed Land Use Planning Committee. She was a member of Hendersonville First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and served on numerous committees. She was a daughter of the late Hamilton and Pearl Ballard McDowell.
Surviving are her husband of 36 years, Charles A. “Buddy” Barker, Jr.; three daughters, Lori Garland of Arden, Alyson Barker Wickman of Asheville and Rachel Barker of the home; two sons, Michael Barker of Greensboro and Aaron Barker of Hendersonville; four brothers, Preston McDowell of Penrose, and Bobby McDowell, James “Coot” McDowell and Grady McDowell, all of Hendersonville; and three grandchildren.

Michael Allman
William Michael Allman, 48, of Fortuna, Calif, formerly of Sylva, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at his home.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Fortuna with Father David Owren officiating.
He was born Jan. 15, 1957, in Scotia, Calif., and was raised in Redway, Calif., and Sylva. He was a graduate of Sylva-Webster High School and received a bachelor’s degree in ecology from Sonoma State University. He also attended College of the Redwoods and Western Carolina University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a licensed wastewater treatment operator. He was employed by Palmer Creek Community Services District and was a substitute teacher. He enjoyed gardening, biking, camping, watching football, juggling, making balloon animals and spending time in the Redwoods. He was a son of Norma Allman and the late William Dean Allman.
Surviving are his wife, Fannette Downie-Allman; three sons, Sean Allman, Gabriel Jackson and William “Bill” Allman; one stepson, Alex Downie; one sister, Susan Clarabut; and two brothers, Dan Allman and Tom Allman.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church or to an organization supporting the health of the planet.

Selma Reece
Selma Dills Reece, 82, of Winterhaven Drive, Sylva, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at Black Mountain Baptist Church with the Revs. Roger Stewman and Sherrill Ammons officiating. Burial was in Pine Ridge Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mickey Dills, Keith Dills, Josh Dills, Cecil Dills, Leonard Dills and Bill Dills.
A native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life, she had worked at Sylco and Lea Industries. She was a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church and was the last surviving child of the late John and Iva Ann Bryson Dills.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Reece.
Surviving are one daughter, Peggy Cook of Fletcher; one son, Robert Lee Dills of Cullowhee; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Joe Cogdill
Kenneth Joe Cogdill, 71, of Skyland Drive, Sylva, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell, Mike Cogdill and Jim Ed Powell officiating. Burial was in Henry Cogdill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lee Ewart, Ned Mills, Mike Hall, Chip Cogdill, Clay Cogdill and Steve Mathis.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill Shook, Manuel Buchanan, Bill Aiken, Huey Buchanan, Bones Hefner, L.C. Mathis, Reece Cook, Poker Woodard, Ronnie Moore, Bud Cogdill, George Ruff, Edward Ruff, David Ruff, Harold Norman, Gary Hoyle and Terry Hoyle.
A native of Haywood County, he had lived in Jackson County most of his life. He was a retired motel operator and a U.S. Army veteran. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Baxter Winslow and Hettie Beck Cogdill.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Cogdill; and one granddaughter.
Surviving are two daughters, Sherri Bryson of Sylva and Diane Honeycutt of Asheville; four sons, David Beck of Candler, Kenny Cogdill of Belmont, and Ricky Cogdill and Bill McCall, both of Waynesville; three sisters, Doris Coggins of Sylva, and Mary Sumner and Sara Shuler, both of Mt. Holly; three brothers, Doyle Cogdill and Dan Cogdill, both of Sylva and Clifford Cogdill of Waynesville; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Grover Bishop
The Rev. Grover Bishop, 76, of Odessa, Texas, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Calvary Baptist Church in Odessa with the Rev. James Bishop officiating. A chapel service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home in Athens. Burial was in Athens.
He was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Cullowhee, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He earned doctorates in theology from Calvary Baptist in Melborne, Fla., divinity from North Baptist College in Fort Worth, Texas, and Baptist Christian College in Shreveport, La., and ministry from Bethany Theological Seminary in Dothan, Ala. He pastored churches for 49 years, including Calvary Baptist in Graham, Texas; Bible Baptist in Bowie, Texas; Fairview Baptist in Little Rock, Ark.; Central Baptist in Athens, Texas; and Calvary Baptist in Odessa. He was a son of the late Neal and Bertie Hooper Bishop.
He was also preceded in death by one son, William Ross Bishop; two sisters, Bonnie and Edna; and six brothers, Milford, Harley, Woody, Dan, Neal Jr. and Fred.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Rosalie Ludwig Bishop; two sons, John Mark Bishop of Athens and the Rev. James Bishop of Odessa; foster son, John Lashwa of Maybank, Texas; three daughters, Lydia Bishop of Athens, Sandy Kietzman of Columbia, Mo., and Peggy Hoffman of Conway, Ark.; one brother, Bill Bishop of Sylva; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Dorothy Cate
Dorothy “Dot” Bernice Branam Cate, 80, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the chapel of Andreson-McQueen Funeral Home in St. Petersburg.
She was born April 26, 1925, in Knoxville, Tenn. She moved to St. Petersburg in 1955, and bought property on Barkers Creek and Kitchens Branch in 1996. She visited Jackson County several times each year. She retired after serving as cafeteria manager at Seminole High School and was a member of the Bethlehem Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She attended Cornerstone Community Church in St. Petersburg and Scotts Creek Baptist Church in Sylva. She was a daughter of the late Charles Ott Branam and Clara Pearl Ammons Rose.
Surviving are her husband, Bernard Cate; two daughters, Rinda Bruce of St. Petersburg and Karen Stockton of Redington Beach, Fla.; four sons, Ronald Drake of Boca Raton, Fla., James Cate of Old Town, Fla., Dean Cate of Whittier and Glenn Cate of St. Petersburg; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Alma Roper
Alma L. Barnes Roper, 92, of Walt Wood Road, Whittier, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Whittier Church of God with the Rev. Ned Pressley officiating. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were R.L. Passmore, Chris Bailey, Doug Noble, Bobby Hampton, Mike Lovelace, Lane Bailey and Weldon Nations.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a charter member of Whittier Church of God, where she was a Sunday school teacher and church secretary. She was a daughter of the late Edd and Lettie Ann Fox Barnes.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Roper who died in 1961; one daughter, Frankie Roper Nations; one brother, VelDee Barnes; and two sisters, Elsie Barnes Roper and Annie Dee Barnes Childers.
Surviving are one sister, Leona Barnes McDonald of Whittier; one half-sister, Faye Stewart of Whittier; two half-brothers, Bill Barnes of High Point and Jim Barnes of California; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Bill Gholson
William “Bill” Lowell Gholson, 70, of Dallas, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Gaston Baptist Church with the Revs. Richard Gaddis and David Livingston officiating. Burial was in Hardin Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Doug Gholson Jr., Justin Gholson, John Michael Knootz, Cole Gholson and Jake Gholson.
He was a native of Lynchburg, Va. He was a former choir director, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Gaston and Plainview Baptist churches. He was disabled during his service in the 570th Engr. Wtr. Sup. Co. of the U.S. Army in the Korean War, and earned two bronze stars. He was a son of the late Willie Briggs and Ruby Elizabeth Guthrie Gholson.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Steve Gholson.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Glorial Gail Stillwell Gholson; four sons, Keith Gholson of Tuckasegee, Bruce Gholson of Mocksville, Doug Gholson of Dallas and Brian Gholson of Franklin; one daughter, Michelle Gholson of High Shoals; three sisters, Carolyn Moller and June Tucker, both of Gastonia, and Pat Price of Knoxville, Tenn.; two brothers, Edward Gholson and Charlie Gholson, both of Dallas; and nine grandchildren.

Nancy McHan
Nancy Evelyn Moody McHan, 95, of Matthews, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at Carrington Place Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 20) at Bryson City Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Swain Memorial Park.
She was born July 19, 1910, in Dellwood, and graduated from Sylva High School. She attended the University of Tennessee, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was a charter member of Sylva Presbyterian Church and a lifetime member of the Bryson City Women of the Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Bryson City Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Woman’s Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a daughter of the late Charles Rector Moody and Elizabeth Liner Moody.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Vernon McHan Sr.
Surviving are one daughter, Dr. Jane McHan of Heidelberg, Germany; one son, John Vernon McHan Jr. of Indian Trail; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Dallas Ward
Dallas Ward, 87, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, at Angel Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Trull and Tommy Ashe officiating. Burial was in Franklin Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Roger Ward, Tony Wood, Kenny Wood, J.R. Case, Jacob Case and Jonathan Case.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she had worked at Log Cabin School in the cafeteria, was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was a daughter of the late Ben and Frances Parker Nicholson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Ralph Ward, who died in 1981; and one daughter, Barbara Wood.
Surviving are one son, Clifford Ward of Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Carmen Farley of Cullowhee, and Daphna Brown and Selma Stribling, both of Brevard; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
