Mustang booters top Pisgah for WAC win
Grant Schallock scored twice while Joey Cox had a goal and three assists leading Smoky Mountain to a 6-1 Western Athletic Conference victory over Smoky Mountain on Oct. 10 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
“It was a nice win,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “We knew Pisgah was down. We came out very hungry. We got two goals really quick, and that set the tone for us.”
Schallock started the scoring three minutes into the game when he knocked in a ball that had been deflected around following a throw-in.
Just a minute later, Zack Christy scored after a Joey Cox corner kick from the left side.
“The ball came through, and Zack ran his route,” Brown said. “He chested it in from 4 or 5 yards out.”
SM made it 3-0 at the 27-minute mark when Cox headed a ball in backwards off of J.R. Collins’ throw-in.
The Mustangs led 4-0 at intermission following David Cheatham’s goal with an assist from Cox at the 38-minute mark.
“Joey had taken the ball deep into the right corner and crossed it back to the middle,” the coach said. “David was totally unmarked.”
SM extended the margin to 5-0 at the 55-minute mark as Schallock scored with an assist from Cox.
“Joey made a cross from the right side,” Brown said. “Grant picked it up 8 yards out far post and knocked it in.”
Matt Reece put the Bears on the board at the 63-minute mark with his shot from 14 yards out.
The Mustangs concluded the scoring on Coleman Corzine’s goal from 16 yards away with an assist from Nils Sager at the 69-minute mark.
SM took 30 shots while holding the Bears to six. Sterling Brady made one saves for the Mustangs, and Cody Bryson had two. Pisgah’s Brianara Burrus recorded 13 saves.
