Time for world to invest as much in peace as in war
To the editor:
Is the world missing a golden opportunity? It seems to be sending us an urgent and frequent message to help one another on this fractured planet. The tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, mudslides and earthquakes all remind us that our neighbor is much more than simply the man next door.
If each of these disasters were confronted by the entire world with the unconditional good will equivalent to the world’s current investment in war, perhaps true peace on Earth might eventually follow. Each country has unique resources to offer, but only one country has to lead the way.
Who has that courage?

Southern people should honor their heritage
To the editor:
As a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, I’d like to point out a few things. We honor all veterans. We honor and salute the American flag first, then the state flag and lastly the Confederate flag.
We honor the graves of our fallen Gray comrades. We place bronze plaques on their graves and take care of their grave sites in Jackson, Swain and Macon counties. We are proud of who we are and what we do.
We espouse heritage, not hate. All southern people should honor their heritage.
