East pulls away from Smoky with big plays after halftime

East Henderson scored on its first two scrimmage plays of the second half to break open a close game Friday en route to a 37-12 Western Athletic Conference football victory over Smoky Mountain at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

Michael Angram carried 21 times for 211 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown run that put the Eagles in control.

Cory Siler paced the Mustang ground game with 73 yards in 25 attempts.

Matt Hawkins completed 11 of 22 passes for 114 yards. Jared Deitz had four receptions totaling 38 yards.

Trailing 13-9, SM got a big break to start the second half when Daniel Buchanan recovered Michael Corbett’s fumble on the kickoff at the East 19. The Mustangs had a first-and-goal at the 6, but failed to convert. Grant Schallock’s second field goal of the game, a 25-yarder, cut the gap to 13-12 with 9:10 to play in the third period.

On the first play after the kickoff, Angram took a pitchout, broke several tackles and raced 74 yards to the end zone. A conversion pass failed leaving the Eagles in front 19-12 with 8:42 on the clock.

The Mustangs were forced to punt, and Jared Quinn completed a 43-yard TD pass to Trey Cornwell on the next play for a 25-12 advantage with 7:10 to play in the third stanza. A conversion run failed.

Adam Johnson recovered Siler’s fumble at the SM 38 setting up the next score. Justin Olek had a 14-run run to open the seven-play drive. Quinn went over from a yard out building the lead to 31-12 with 2:46 to go in the third quarter. A conversion pass failed keeping the score 31-12.

David Capps intercepted Hawkins’ pass giving East possession at its 44 following a penalty.

The Eagles drove inside the Mustang 20 before Buchanan picked off Quinn’s pass and brought the ball back 38 yards to midfield.

East took over on downs at its 33 and drove 67 yards in seven plays to conclude the scoring. Angram had a 23-yard gain, and Justin Hill picked up 17 to highlight the march. Hill scored from the 5 to account for the 37-12 final with 2:53 left in the contest. Capps missed the extra point.

The Eagles didn’t waste much time scoring in the game’s opening minutes. Mac Merrell recovered Hawkins’ fumble at the SM 24, and Angram picked up 19 yards on the next play. He scored on a 7-yard run, and Capps added the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 10:06 remaining in the opening quarter.

Following an exchange of punts, the Mustangs got on the board with a 68-yard drive in 11 plays. Siler had runs of 19 and 20 yards to key the march. He scored from the 4, but Schallock missed the PAT cutting East’s lead to 7-6 with 2:37 to play in the first period.

East yielded possession on downs the next two times it had the ball, including a drive that ended at the 4.

The deep drive indirectly led to a score as Schallock’s punt was blocked with Zack Minnick recovering the ball in the end zone for a 13-6 lead with 6:54 to play in the half. Capps missed the extra point.

Hawkins completed passes of 14 and 10 yards to Deitz and 13 yards to Josh Jones while Siler had a 10-yard run leading to Schallock’s 28-yard field goal with 21.8 seconds left in the half bringing SM within 13-9.
