East Henderson tops SM in league match

East Henderson dropped the first game but recovered to take a 19-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 Western Athletic Conference volleyball victory over Smoky Mountain to spoil Senior Night on Oct. 11 at the SM gym.

“We got off to a good start but had a hard time maintaining focus,” Coach Tonya Snider said.

Colleen Davis’ five service points produced an 11-11 tie in game one. Sarah Haggard served three points and Jennifer Webb had a block giving SM a 19-16 edge. Davis served the final point.

East jumped to a 14-7 advantage in game two. LeNay Shular’s three points, including an ace, cut the gap to 19-16 , but the Lady Mustangs could come no closer.

The Lady Eagles never trailed in the third came. SM’s lone run came after Haggard’s four points, including an ace, and Jennifer Webb’s kill made it 19-13.

East built a 14-6 lead in the fourth game. Haggard’s five points, including an ace, along with kills by Gilbert and Webb, cut the deficit to 17-13, but SM could come no closer.

Sarah Haggard recorded 19 assists and 11 digs while Amy Haggard came up with 23 digs. Webb put down nine kills.

Sarah Haggard led in service points with 16. Davis served 91.7 percent. Team serving was 83.3 percent.

The Lady Mustang JVs won their first match of the year 25-23, 25-21.

“We finally played like I knew we could all season,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “Everybody did really well, stayed focused and hustled.”
