Cullowhee VFD BBQ this Saturday
By Justin Goble
Anyone who craves slow-roasted, hickory-smoked barbecue should make a point to attend Caullowhee Volunteer Fire Department’s eastern style barbecue dinner this Saturday, Oct. 22, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Cullowhee Valley School cafeteria.
This year marks the 29th anniversary of the event. As is well known among Cullowhee residents (and some visitors who plan their vacations around the famous barbecue), the dinner is always on the fourth Saturday of October.
According to CVFD Fire Chief Richard Frady, cooking the pork will be an all-night affair.
“The meat is hickory smoked,” he said. “It’s slow cooked over hickory coals all night Friday. It’s the way we’ve done it for 28 years. There’s no reason to change for the 29th.”
Firefighters handle the cooking duties themselves, and, unlike at many barbecue dinners, they choose not to cook whole pigs. Instead, Frady said they will cook 3,600 pounds of shoulder roasts called Boston Butt.
“It gives a better quality of meat,” Frady said. “There’s less bone, and there’s less meat wasted.”
The pork will be accompanied by a tomato-based sauce, along with baked beans, coleslaw and hush puppies with dessert and drink. Cost is $6 per plate, with tickets available at the door. Carry-outs will be available.
Music will also be a part of the festivities this Saturday. Featured singers will include Chuck Norris and Evergreen, and Greens Creek community’s Mountain Faith.
Free batteries for smoke detectors will also be given away during the day. Chief Frady said the department received four cases of Energizer batteries to give out in an effort to encourage people to change the batteries in their smoke detectors.
Firefighters are seeking donations of homemade cakes for the dinner, which can be dropped off at the cafeteria on Saturday.
Proceeds from the dinner will go towards equipment for the CVFD.
