Cats will see action at Chattanooga Saturday

Following an open date, Western Carolina will travel to Chattanooga for a 6 p.m. game Saturday that could further jumble the Southern Conference football standings.

The Moccasins (2-1, 5-2) are tied for first place in the league while the Catamounts (1-2, 2-3) are tied for sixth but are just a game behind the leaders.

“It’s a tremendous challenge to play down there,” Coach Kent Briggs said. “The last time we went to Chattanooga, we played poorly. At the same time, where there’s a challenge there’s an opportunity.”

WCU quarterback Justin Clark, who left the Georgia Southern game with a concussion, is expected to play Saturday.

Backup quarterback Michael McQueeney is sidelined with mononucleosis.

Chattanooga quarterback Antonio Miller is averaging 137.4 yards passing. His favorite receiver, Emmanuel Hassell, leads the conference in receptions with 5.71.

Eldra Buckley paces the Moc ground game with 87 yards rushing per game.

The Cats counter with the league’s best defense, which is yielding 314.8 yards per game. The WCU pass defense, which allows 125.6 yards, is also tops in the conference.
