USPS is considering three sites for new Sylva post office
By Lynn Hotaling
Three sites are still under consideration for a new Sylva post office, according to a letter Mayor Brenda Oliver read during last week’s (Oct. 6) Sylva board session.
In contention are a site at the north end of Jackson Plaza; existing space at Jackson Plaza, which is believed to be the former Karrtunz location next to Thunder Lanes bowling alley; and 2.74 acres owned by Norman Flaxman just off N.C. 107 on Hensley Circle.
Any member of the community may submit written comments during the next month, according to the letter Oliver received.
Bob Rizzuto, a U.S. Postal Service real estate specialist in Greensboro, said the town will be informed of postal officials’ selection within a month.
Sylva town officials have long lobbied for the undeveloped site at Jackson Plaza. A deal for that property appeared imminent more than four years ago only to be halted by a freeze on post office spending.
Town leaders have already written to Rizzuto endorsing that site during the current selection process. Jackson Plaza was chosen a year ago as the site for a new Jackson County Library.
“I’d prefer the post office to be located as close to the downtown district as possible, so I’d prefer it be at one of the Jackson Plaza sites,” said Mayor Oliver. “If it were on N.C. 107, it would add to the congestion.”
Rizzuto’s letter to Oliver also included a list of four sites rejected by USPS officials. A site on the west side of N.C. 107 near N.C. 116 was eliminated for being too small; land off Business 23 on Dillardtown Road was also determined to be too small; a site on the southeast corner of Fairview Road and Ashe Loop Road just east of N.C. 107 was dismissed because it was outside of the preferred area; and land and a building on Fairview Road just east of N.C. 107 was eliminated for the same reason.
Anyone wishing to comment on either of the three sites still under consideration may write to Vice President, Facilities, Attention: Robert Rizzuto; P.O. Box 27497; Greensboro, NC 27498-1103.
