SM runners compete in meet at Franklin

Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in a meet last Thursday at Franklin.

“It didn’t rain too hard, but it was wet,” Coach Lawson Hopper said.

Anthony Stephens led the Mustang men as he was 47th out of 137 runners in 21:08. Completing SM’s top five were:

Bryan McManus, 67th, 21:56; Trey Franks, 68th, 21:58; Grayson Cooper, 107th, 24:27; and Chris Hoglen, 122nd, 26:12.

The Mustangs finished 11th among 12 teams.

Standout runner Travis Brotherton did not compete due to a sprained ankle he sustained in a pick-up basketball game.

Brotherton’s most recent competition was in the Wendy’s meet in Charlotte where he won the open (second) division in 16:08.

The Lady Mustangs did not have enough runners to qualify for team standings. Cadence Railsback led the way as she was 31st among 94 runners in 25:03.

Molly Collins was 33rd in 25:15 followed by Emily Butcher (60th, 27:41) and Katie Hayes (62nd, 27:49).

“The meet went well,” Hopper said. “Franklin is a tough course, but with the rain it was cooler.”
