Clyde Morgan
Clyde Allen Morgan, 69, of Maple Springs Road, Sylva, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at his residence after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Robert Blanton and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Old Norman Cemetery with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.
Pallbearers were Joe Shook, Terry Hoyle, Gary Hoyle, James Mosley Jr., Frank Mosley and Kenny Mathis.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill Crawford, Joe Cook, Odell Haskett, Joe Cogdill and Carl Adams.
A native of Jackson County, he was raised in Haywood County and eventually moved back to Jackson County. He retired from Dayco with 30 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a son of the late Jason and Ester Cope Morgan.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Bumgarner; and one brother, Clifton Morgan.
Surviving are three daughters, Cynthia Brown of Deltona, Fla., Pauline White of Oviedo, Fla., Clydette Burke of Canton; one brother, Roy Morgan of Washington; and eight grandchildren.

Thomas Braswell
Thomas Jay Braswell, 77, of Lenoir, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the chapel of Greer-McElveen Funeral Home with the Revs. Floyd Boston and Gordon Noble officiating. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery.
He was born March 8, 1928, in Caldwell County, and was retired from Singer Furniture Industries. He was a member of Berea Advent Christian Church, where he was involved in the Berea Men’s Fellowship. He was also a member of the Collettsville Ruritan Club for 17 years. He was a son of the late Filson James and Bell Bowman Braswell.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Keller Braswell; three brothers, Elmo, James and Gordon Braswell; and one sister, Mae Kirby.
Surviving are his wife, Jane G. Braswell; two stepsons, Charles Greene and Douglas Greene, both of Lenoir; two stepdaughters, Teresa Goble and Lisa Austin, both of Lenoir and three stepgrandchildren, including Justin Goble of Cullowhee.

Leroy Rice
Leroy Rice, 83, of Cashiers, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Cashiers Baptist Church with the Revs. Phillip Kuykendall, Robert Driggers and Chris Norris officiating. Burial was in Upper Zachary Cemetery.
A native of Macon County, he lived in Jackson County most of his life. He was a retired caretaker, a member of Heady Mountain Baptist Church and an avid coon hunter. He was a son of the late L.D. and Annie Hughes Rice.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Glenn Rice; an infant sister; and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Nellie Kinsey Rice; two daughters, Janice Dillard of Cashiers and Sharon Garen of Mills River; four sons, Robert Leroy Rice of Flowery Branch, Ga., James Donnie Rice of Rosman, Bennie Odell Rice of Bull Pen and Billy Ray Rice of Cashiers; three sisters, Helen Long of Pickens, S.C., Gladys Sewell of Gastonia and Mary Ann Rogers of Cashiers; four brothers, Ward Rice of Pickens, James Rice of Burlington, Earl Rice of Pickens and Johnny Rice of Stanley; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Susie Beck
Susie Hall Beck, 86, of Sylva, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 13) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Burrell officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12. Burial will be in Old Savannah Cemetery.
She was born and raised in Jackson County. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and former co-owner, along with her husband, of Beck Shell Station in Savannah community. She was a daughter of the late Richard H. Hall and Lela Buchanan Hall.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Shirley Ray Beck; three brothers, Jack, Walter and Mack; two half-brothers, Lyndon and Emless; and one half-sister, Annie.
Surviving is one sister, Violet Hall Robins of Candler.
