Lady Mustangs win first match at home

Smoky Mountain won its first home volleyball match of the season by knocking off Pisgah 25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 25-22 in a Western Athletic Conference match on Oct. 4.

“It was good to win a conference game at home,” said Coach Tonya Snider, who singled out Colleen Davis for her play on the back row.

The Lady Mustangs took a 7-4 lead on three points from LeNay Shular and made it 12-6 after Davis’ four points. They maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way with the game ending on a service error.

Sarah Haggard served the first six points, including two aces, in game two while Jennifer Webb contributed three kills. The Lady Mustangs built the lead to 16-8 on Haggard’s three points, including an ace. The Sugar Bears charged back for a 21-21 tie, but Haggard served the final two points with Webb having a block and a kill.

Brittany Gilbert’s three points, along with kills by Webb and Kelli Woodard, put SM up 5-3 in game three. Pisgah used a 10-2 run to take the lead for good at 13-7. Woodard’s three points and Amy Haggard’s kill cut the gap to 15-13, but the Sugar Bears scored the final six points.

Shular’s three points gave the Lady Mustangs a 6-4 edge in game four. After SM fell behind, Shular responded with six points, including an ace, while Amy Haggard had two kills and Woodard one for a 21-16 lead. Webb ended the match with a kill for a side out.

Webb finished with 12 kills and five blocks, and Amy Haggard led in kills with 13. Gilbert was tops in digs with 16 followed by Woodard with 15 and Davis, Amy Haggard and Sarah Haggard all with 10. Amy Haggard handled 15 of 19 serve receptions.

Shular and Sarah Haggard led in service points with 15 and 14, respectively. Shular served 95.5 percent while Davis finished at 92.9 and Amy Haggard was at 90. Cassie Randall was perfect in two serves. Team serving was 88.8 percent.

Pisgah won the JV match 25-17, 25-16.

“We did not show up at all,” assistant coach Lauren Riggan said. “We have to learn to come out and play with the level we know we can play at.”
