Corzine scores five goals in SM victory

Coleman Corzine scored five goals as Smoky Mountain crushed North Henderson 8-0 in a Western Athletic Conference soccer game on Oct. 3 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

“I attribute that game to the leadership on the team,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “Our seniors got pretty intense about it. We played smart and did some things we hadn’t done before in games.”

Corzine opened the scoring on a penalty kick with nine minutes elapsed after a hand ball in the box.

J.R. Collins made it 2-0 when he scored just a minute later. The play started with a corner kick, and the ball was deflected around before Collins put it home from 6 yards out.

Corzine’s second penalty kick, this one after a foul in the box, extended the margin to 3-0 at the 34-minute mark.

The Mustangs led 4-0 at intermission after Corzine scored from 10 yards out off an assist from Grant Schallock with two minutes left in the half.

SM’s domination continued two minutes into the second half as Corzine scored from 12 yards away with Joey Cox providing the assist for a 5-0 advantage.

Cox got into the scoring act at the 46-minute mark with an assist from Rob Tyson from 12 yards out.

Tyson also provided the assist on Corzine’s final goal, which came at the 53-minute mark.

Coleman Morgan concluded the scoring with an assist from Alex Niendstedt at the 61-minute mark.

The Mustangs took twice as many shots as their opponent 28-14. SM’s Sterling Brady made seven saves, and teammate Cody Bryson had three. Bernardino Huerta recorded 10 for the Knights.

The Mustang JVs won 4-1. Goals were scored by John Brown, Keller Berry, Ian Youmans and Noah Gallinger. Providing assists were Adam Ray, Cort Smith and Gallinger.

“That was a nice win,” Coach Stephan Delor said. “We came mentally ready.”
