Brevard downs SM for first league win
After going winless in the first half of the Western Athletic Conference action, Brevard picked up its first league volleyball win with a 21-25, 29-27, 25-23, 23-25, 16-14 victory last Thursday at Smoky Mountain.
“I didn’t feel like we played really bad,” Coach Tonya Snider said. “Brevard had improved quite a bit.”
She singled out LeNay Shular for her performance.
The Lady Mustangs (5-12, 2-5) jumped to a 7-1 lead in gave five as Brittany Gilbert served three points, including an ace, and Kelli Woodard had a kill. The Lady Devils fought back but never took the lead until they scored the last three points.
Game one was close all the way until Woodard served five points, including an ace, and Amy Haggard had a kill for a 23-19 lead. The game ended on Haggard’s ace.
Colleen Davis’ four points and Haggard’s kill put SM up 9-6 in game two. The Lady Mustangs maintained a slight lead most of the game, but Brevard came on strong at the end to win.
Haggard’s three points, including an ace, produced a 10-10 tie in the third game. The Lady Devils again closed strong with the last three points.
Brevard ran off the first six points of game four, but SM battled back to lead 15-10 on seven points by Davis while Woodard had four kills and Haggard had a kill and a block. Haggard’s three points combined with Gilbert’s two kills and one by Webb, upped the margin to 23-15. The Lady Devils came storming back, but Webb’s kill ended the game on a side out.
Sarah Haggard came within one of tying the school record for assists as she finished with 49. Webb and Amy Haggard put down 19 and 18 kills, respectively.
Davis led in service points with 15 while serving 95.8 percent. Amy Haggard added 10 points. Cassie Randall got all three of her serves in. Team serving was 88.6 percent.
The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 0-17 with a 26-24, 25-17 loss. They let a 23-16 lead get away in the first game.
“That was our best game of the season,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “It’s the first time we played as a team.”
She cited Heather Parton for her defense and Annelise Davis for her net play.
The home match with West Henderson on Tuesday, Oct. 18, will start an hour earlier than usual due to homecoming activities. The JVs will begin at 4 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
