The concrete bridge at Cullowhee (top photo) was destroyed by the flood of Aug. 30, 1940, as was every other bridge across the Tuckaseigee River in Jackson County. Buildings in the background are, from left, Robert Brown’s house, Brown’s store and Battle’s Grocery, which also housed the Cullowhee Post Office. The old railroad line from Sylva to East LaPorte is visible in front of Battle’s as is the smokestack at the steam plant on Western Carolina University’s campus. To the right of the smokestack is the Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery. In the recent photo, kudzu obscures the old Battle’s store, which was the Village Store after that. The top of the smokestack is still barely visible above the trees, and a few of the cemetery’s markers can be seen to the left of the power line. The buildings that once housed both Brown’s house and store still stand, though they have been remodeled over the years. While the river has risen on several occasions since 1940, no subsequent flood has threatened the bridge. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
