Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Julia Queen

Julia Sherrill Queen, 65, of Annie Bird Loop, Cherokee, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Cherokee Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Don Ensley and Bo Parris officiating. Burial was in Washington Family Cemetery on Jenkins Creek.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Andy and Annie Bird Sherrill.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tom Queen Sr., who died in 2000; three brothers, David Bird, Lee Andy Bird and John Ute Sherrill; one son, Jesse Queen; and one daughter, Henrietta Queen.

Surviving are six daughters, Mary Sherrill, Rebecca Queen, Kina Queen, Tammy Queen, Lena Sequoyah and Johnnie Queen, all of Cherokee; two sons, Tom Queen Jr. and Jasper Queen, both of Cherokee; four sisters, Margaret Lossiah, Jessie Wildcat and Rita Wildcat, all of Cherokee, and Grace Tahbonemah of Mesquite, Texas; 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Charles Davis

Charles Adam Davis, 58, of Cherokee’s Big Cove community, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at Cherokee Indian Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Straight Fork Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Charles Ray Ball and James Red Bradley officiating. Burial was in Davis Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Swain County and retired from The Cherokee’s as the plant manager. He was a son of the late George and Katie Ross Davis.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth; and one sister, Callie.

Surviving are one daughter, Lori Davis of Cherokee; one son, Kenneth Davis of Cherokee; 10 sisters, Lawanda Jackson, Wilma Pheasant, Beatrice Standingdeer, Alice Kekahbah, Frances Welch, Katherine Painter, Hattie Panther, Gloria Panther and Pat Standingdeer, all of Cherokee, and Alma Johns of Hollywood, Fla.; seven brothers, Ernest, Snake, Floyd, Sam, Rick, Kenny and Jim Panther, all of Cherokee; and three grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Katherine Lambert

Katherine Louise Lambert, 62, of Martin Road, Whittier, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. John Reid officiating. Burial was in Campground Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Virgil Messer, Doug Jenkins, Barry Bartrug, Bob Smith, Steven Blankenship, Gene Sutton, Jerry Breedlove and Sonny Holder.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a machine operator at White Shield and a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. She enjoyed canning, baking cookies and crocheting. She was a daughter of the late Jack and Selma Messer Lambert.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lovocia Cole and Elizabeth Dennis.

Surviving are one sister, Betty Smith of Bryson City; and three brothers, Bill Lambert of Bryson City, Claude Lambert of Richfield and David Lambert of Burlington.



Larkin Middleton

Larkin Ray Middleton, 52, of Lake Toxaway, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, in an Asheville hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at The Church at Sapphire, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Jackie Hensley and Danny McLamb officiating. Burial was in East LaPorte Cemetery.

He was a native of Newport News, Va., and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a son of the late Larkin E. and Doris Dills Middleton.

Surviving are his wife, Rachel Lyday Middleton; one daughter, Lindsey Middleton of Lake Toxaway; and one brother, Bruce Middleton of Marshall.

Moody-Connolly Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Ethel Goforth

Ethel Louise Goforth, 58, of Rainell, W.Va., formerly of Cherokee, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Echota Baptist Church with the Revs. Bo Parris and Russ Bradley officiating. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.

She had lived in Rainell for the last 20 years and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Lena Murphy Goforth.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Catherine Goforth Campbell.

Surviving are four sisters, Marilyn G. Lambert of Cherokee, Susan “Teal” Moore of Hendersonville, Faye Davis of Enka and Hazel Marie Bradley of Rainell; and two brothers, Arthur “Sonny” Goforth Jr. of Enka and Ben Edward Goforth of Clyde.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Elinor Roper

Elinor A. Roper, 82, of Teigue Cove Road, Whittier, formerly a resident of New Fairfield, Conn., died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Interment of ashes will be in Central Cemetery, Brookfield, Conn., with a graveside service at a later date.

She was born in Brookfield, and was a 1944 graduate of St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Bridgeport, Conn. After graduation she was a registered nurse and enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps at the outbreak of World War II. She was a second lieutenant, tending the wounded in the Pacific Theater in Manila, Philippine Islands. She worked for many years as an R.N. in the Danbury, Conn., area. She was a daughter of the late David Peterson and Jeannette Kane Peterson.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Lloyd Roper.

Surviving are one daughter, Margene Roper of Whittier; and one brother, David Peterson of Oakville, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ricky Smith

Ricky Dale Smith, 47, of Blue Wing Road, Cherokee, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Cherokee Church of God with Minister A.J. Skelton, James Frady and Hillard Smith officiating. Burial was in Smith Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Sneed, Ricky Sutton, Nathaniel Sutton, Brad Bradley, Brad Grant, John Smith, Jim Eller and Sammy Sutton.

A native of Haywood County, he had lived in Jackson County for the last 35 years. He was a self-employed carpenter and attended Cherokee Church of God. He was an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indian and an avid outdoorsman. He was a son of Ned David Sr. and Mary Sutton Smith of Cherokee.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sons, Tristan Smith of Nantahala and Zachery Busbin of Athens, Ga.; four sisters, Pat Oocumma and Vicki Reed, both of Cherokee, Sherry Baldwin of Virginia and Dianne Smith of Austin, Texas; and one brother, Ned David Smith Jr. of Cherokee.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Enid Goodwin

Lou Enid Jones Goodwin, 87, of Arcola Drive, Cullowhee, formerly of Spartanburg, S.C., died Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. T. Lee Bryant Jr. officiating.

She was born Oct. 21, 1917, in Spartanburg, and was a graduate of Converse College. She was a retired teacher with Spartanburg School District 7 with 30 years of service. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Spartanburg, and a past member of the first African Violet Society of Spartanburg and the S.C. Education Association. She was a daughter of the late John Elias and Lou Ella Wolfe Jones.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dixon P. “D.P.” Goodwin; and one sister, Kathleen J. White.

Surviving are one son, Dixon J. Goodwin of Gilbert, S.C.

George Reeser

George William Reeser, 74, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, at his residence of complications from leukemia after a brief illness.

Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Cullowhee United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104 and Masonic rites by East LaPorte Masonic Lodge 358.

Pallbearers were Jerry Cook, Jerry Friesner, William Medaris, Arnold Nielsen, James Turner and Don Wood.

Honorary pallbearers were Maynard Adams, Aaron Ball, Jay Ball, Ralph Causby, Robert Dalley, William Dillard, Thomas Dowell, James Herren, Bill Higgins, Jim Hunter, Livingston Kelley, Bobby Setzer, Henry Speich, Max Williams, Davis Woodard, Dickie Woodard and Chuck Wooten.

He was born Aug. 27, 1931, in Logansport, Ind., and graduated from Logansport High School in 1949. He attended Ball State University until he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and served in the Korean War from 1952 to the end of 1953. After the war he completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Ball State.

He taught industrial arts in the Indiana Public School System from 1956 until 1963. In 1964 he accepted an associate professorship in Western Carolina University’s Industrial Education and Technology Department, where he taught and coordinated the graduate studies program. He completed his doctorate degree in 1970 at Ohio State University, then returned to WCU and received tenure and a full professorship. He served in that position until his retirement in 1990.

In the summer of 1985 he traveled to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where he worked for RAMCO Corp. and wrote training manuals for the Saudi government. He also worked as a State Certified Residential Appraiser for the last 20 years, along with his son, Mark, at Reeser Appraisal Service. He was a residential contractor and rental property manager in the Sylva and Cullowhee area.

He enjoyed collecting rare coins from different countries and antique thermometers. He was a member of the William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104, a past member of the Elks Club of Ellwood, Ind., an associate member of the N.C. Appraisal Institute, a Mason for 48 years and a member of Cullowhee United Methodist Church for the past 41 years. He was a son of the late Harold and Goldie Reeser.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Dewey Reeser.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Rosina Bowser Reeser; one son, Mark William Reeser; one daughter, Melanie Reeser Donnell; four sisters, Adrienne Reeser Brew of Royal Center, Ind., Arlene Reeser Brown of Kewanna, Ind., Martha Reeser Coppenhauer of Logansport, and Suzie Reeser Seldenright of Dayton, Ohio; one brother, Fred Reeser of Logansport; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to WestCare Hospice, 68 Hospital Rd., Sylva, NC 28779; or to the Cullowhee United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1267, Cullowhee, NC 28723.
