North Henderson tops SM in conference play

North Henderson turned back Smoky Mountain 25-23, 28-26, 18-25, 25-21 in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match on Sept. 27 at the SM gym.

“We’re so close,” assistant coach Sarah Komosinski said. “We’ve got it skill-wise, and we play hard. We just can’t finish. We let them run off too many points in a row.”

The Lady Knights held a narrow lead throughout the opening game. Amy Haggard’s three points, including an ace, produced a 23-23 tie, but North scored the last two points.

SM went up 9-7 in game two on four points, including an ace, by Colleen Davis. The game stayed close the rest of the way with both teams having opportunities before the Lady Knights nailed it down.

Davis’ three points gave the Lady Mustangs a 7-6 edge in the third game. They upped the margin to 14-10 on four points, including an ace, by Sarah Haggard and Jennifer Webb’s kill. SM led 18-11 when Brittany Gilbert served four points, including an ace, and Webb had a kill. Sarah Haggard served the last two points with Webb providing another kill.

Sarah Haggard served the first four points of the fourth game with Webb providing a block and kill. North moved in front 18-17 and led the remainder of the match.

Webb put down 15 kills while Sarah Haggard had 22 assists and 10 digs. Kelli Woodard led in digs with 13 while Gilbert and Amy Haggard had 11 apiece.

Amy Haggard and Woodard were perfect in 12 and nine serve receptions, respectively. Gilbert handled 12 of 13, and Davis was 10 of 11.

Davis, who didn’t miss in 18 serves, was tops in service points with 11. Sarah Haggard added 10 points. Also not missing a serve were Woodard (11) and Katie Johnson (four). Team serving was 86.5 percent.

North won the JV match 25-21, 25-23.

“That was our best game of the season,” Coach Natasha Wilson said.

She noted Taylor Boss did well in her first match as the lone setter. Jordan Cagle was cited for her hitting.
