Mirinda helps Eagles top Smoky Mountain
Catalino Mirinda scored a pair of goals helping East Henderson to a 3-1 Western Athletic Conference soccer victory over Smoky Mountain on Sept. 28 at East.
“We’re having issues in the midfield,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “We are not passing the ball well. We work on that, but we’re going to have to spend more time on it. When you control the midfield, you attack more.”

The Eagles wasted no time getting on the board as Mirinda scored in the first 30 seconds.
“He got the ball totally unmarked,” Brown said. “He dribbled to the edge of the box and ripped it.”
That’s how it stayed until the 52-minute mark when Chase Branson scored for a 2-0 edge.
“Our defender tried to clear the ball, but one of their players got it and ended up one-on-one with the keeper,” the coach said.
Mirinda’s insurance goal at the 75-minute mark made it 3-0.
“The ball got knocked around, and he ended up with it and scored from 12 yards out,” the coach said
The Mustangs (8-4-1, 0-2) averted the shutout when Coleman Corzine scored from 8 yards out with two minutes left.
East had a 19-11 advantage in shots. SM’s Sterling Brady recorded 14 saves while East had five saves from Drake Branson and two from Brandon Baird.
The Mustang JVs are 4-2-1 after a 1-0 victory. Cort Smith scored on a breakaway with three minutes remaining.
A game scheduled with McDowell last Thursday at Western Carolina was not played due to problems with the sprinkler system at the WCU field. It will not be made up.
