Lady Mustangs lose to defending champs

Two-time defending state 2-A volleyball champion West Henderson defeated Smoky Mountain 25-15, 25-15, 25-16 in Western Athletic Conference action last Thursday at West.

“We had some good rallies where we played well,” Coach Tonya Snider said. “In each game we played with them for about the first 15 minutes. The longer they held with us, the more we got frustrated, and they ran off several points in a row. We need for all of our players to show up on the same night.”

West took a 12-9 lead in the first game and breezed from there.

The Lady Falcons scored the last eight points of the second game.

West dominated the third game after jumping on top 13-5. The Lady Mustangs (1-3, 4-10) made a mini-run as freshman Jordan Cagle, in her varsity debut, served four points, including an ace, and Kelli Woodard had a kill cutting the gap to 21-13.

Sarah Haggard handed out 12 assists, and Woodard had 10 kills.

Not missing a serve were LeNay Shular (seven), Amy Haggard (six), Cagle and Colleen Davis (five), Kelly Childress (two) and Katie Johnson (one). Team serving was 93.9 percent.

The Lady Mustang JVs are now winless in 14 matches after West won 25-5, 25-15.

“This was a tough game, but it gave me a chance to get everybody involved,” Coach Natasha Wilson said.
