Brevard defeats SM on goal by Cooper

Dylan Cooper scored the game’s lone goal at the 34-minute mark as Brevard blanked Smoky Mountain 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference soccer opener Sept. 26 at Brevard.

“We were not mentally prepared for this game,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “We came out flat, and Brevard was very inspired. We did not control the midfield.”

Cooper’s goal was unassisted.

“We did not mark the guy,” Brown said. “He got the ball in the middle of the field. There was nobody near him. He dribbled just inside the box and ripped it from 18 yards.”

The Blue Devils had an 11-6 edge in shots. Phillip Bennett made five saves for the Blue Devils, and SM’s Sterling Brady had nine.

The JVs battled to a 1-1 tie. Ian Youmans scored SM’s goal, and Noah Gallinger had an assist.

“We played a good team,” Coach Stephan Delor said. “We played hard, and we were fortunate to come out with a tie.”
