DAVID PRESTON’S EDWARD JONES office is featured this week in our Business Spotlight. See his ad on the back page of this section to learn more about how he can help with all your investment needs.
THE JARRETT HOUSE, a Dillsboro landmark for a century or so, is featured on page 37 in a publication featuring diners in North Carolina which is currently available from Our State magazine. The magazine, titled “Diners: 57 places the locals love to eat,” highlights restaurants across the state that feature home-cooked meals. Owners Jim and Jean Hartbarger preside over the restaurant, which is famous for fried chicken, chicken-and-dumplings, county ham, and, of course, made-from-scratch biscuits.
AND SPEAKING OF RESTAURANTS, Shirley Bryson of Sylva is this week’s winner in our “Have Dinner on Us” contest that’s part of our Great Smoky Dining Guide. Shirley wins a $25 gifit certificate to KFC. To find out how to enter, see the restaurant listings on pages 4 and 5C.
PHOTOGRAPHER LARRY TUCKER will be the October featured artist at It’s By Nature gallery on Main Street. His show, titled “Appalachian Light: Original photographs of the Southern Appalachians,” will be on display beginning Saturday, Oct. 1. The gallery will host an opening reception for Tucker on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 7 until 9 p.m. For more information, call 631-3020.
THE JACKSON COUNTY RESCUE SQUAD will be collecting donations for Gulfport, Miss., at several places over the next two weeks. Squad members are seeking non-perishable food and money to be taken to remote churches in the Gulfport area that haven’t received help from agencies and to people who aren’t able to travel to where food is being served.
SKYLAND CARE CENTER now has two activity directors and is planning to add more trips and events for the residents. Nettie Franks of Sylva and Robbie Smith of Bryson City are now the activity and marketing coordinators at Skyland. Among the expanded activities will be train rides, fishing trips, picnics and movies, say Franks and Smith.
WESTCARE HEALTH SYSTEM will host a Red Cross Blood Drive today (Thursday) from 1 until 5:30 p.m. in the main lobby at Harris Regional Hospital. Please call 586-7404 to make an appointment.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY’S Used Book Store on Main Street across from The Herald offices is having a fall fiction sale starting this week. Hundreds of hard-cover and paperbacks have been marked down to 25 or 50 cents each. Favorite authors and popular genres are included. Many non-sale books have been also been reduced in price. “This is the time to stock up for your winter reading,” a Friends spokesman said.
THE DOWNTOWN SYLVA ASSOCIATION would like to remind residents and visitors that a parking lot has been leased at the end of Main Street for Mill Street merchants and their customers to use during road construction on Mill. This lot previously held cars from the Western Carolina Dodge dealership and has a sign at the corner announcing that the lot is for use by the Mill Street merchants, courtesy of Sylva Partners in Renewal. Although it is harder to access businesses on Mill Street, due to the construction, the following are open for business during regular hours and would certainly appreciate your business: Wards Plumbing & Heating, The Pet Stop, Sylva Glass & Mirror, Mill & Main, Dingleberry‚s Brewing Supplies, Horace Mann Insurance, Heinzelmannchen Brewery, Kung Fu Academy, Fandemonium, Bay’s Corner, Fitzgerald’s Shoe Repair, Jane’s Beauty Shop and Cope’s Superette. Please continue to support these businesses through this construction effort, said SPIR administrator Linda Gillman. |
