Officer witnesses wreck; driver flees from scene

By Carey Phillips

A Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy, who was out on a traffic stop, witnessed an automobile accident after which the driver fled the scene.

James Sistare, 27, of Chestnut Cove Road, Sylva, was subsequently charged with assault on a government official and resisting arrest, according to records at the Jackson County Clerk of Court office.

Sgt. Matt Helton had a vehicle stopped early Saturday morning on old N.C. 107 when he heard squealing tires and saw a car fishtail and strike a tree, according to Capt. Steve Lillard.

As Helton approached the vehicle, someone exited from the driver’s side and ran, Lillard said. The man (Sistare) was located, checked by an ambulance crew Helton had called to the scene and transported to Harris Regional Hospital, Lillard said.
