Bill Lambert
Willard Howard “Bill” Lambert, 60, of Cherokee’s Birdtown community, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, in Haywood Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Bethabara Baptist Church of which he was a member, with the Revs. Mitchell Smiley and Ricky Stepp officiating. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.
A native of Swain County, he was a former member of the Tribal Council and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam. He was a son of Ethel Murphy Lambert of Cherokee and the late Willard Lambert.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lambert; and one sister, Shirlene McCoy.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one daughter, Nadine Walsh of Albany, N.Y.; one brother, Walter “Bud” Lambert of Cherokee; and four sisters, Shirley Stepp of Dawsonville, Ga., and Inez Huskey, Caroldene Higgins and Alice Owle, all of Cherokee.

Duff Hensley
Duff Hensley, 75, of Leatherwood Road, Sylva, formerly of Waynesville, died at his daughter’s home Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating.
A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Haywood County for the past 15 years. He had worked with the N.C. Department of Transportation in the road maintenance department. He was a son of the late James F. and Pearl Hensley.
Surviving are three daughters, Wanda Dills of Cullowhee, Effie Pearl Hensley of Mills River and Janet Parker Mull of Sylva; two sons, James H. Hensley of Sylva and Dayton E. Hensley of Waynesville; two sisters, Pauline Crane of Burnsville and Faye Crane of High Point; one brother, Franklin D. Hensley of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Leah Leathers
Leah Elizabeth Leathers, 2, of Waynesville, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held at noon today (Thursday, Sept. 22) at Grey Stone Baptist Church with Dr. Albert Allen and the Rev. Tom Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
She was born in Durham, and enjoyed being outside, riding her bike, going to church and taking care of her fish. She was a daughter of Jennifer Leah Walker Leathers and Robert Lee Leathers, both of Waynesville.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her maternal grandmother, Kimberly Lumley Wingate of Durham; maternal grandfathers, Jamie Walker and Bobby Wingate, both of Durham; paternal grandparents, Tim and Cathy Leathers of Durham; paternal great-grandparents, Bobby and Jackie Wingate of Durham; maternal great-grandparents, Harvey and Mary Jo Lumley of Morrisville; maternal great-grandmothers, Violet Lumley of Durham and Margaret Stuppy of Timberlake; and maternal great-grandfather, Ron Walker of Durham.

Fremont Buchanan
Fremont Buchanan, 77, of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, at his home.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Lemley Chapel Funeral Home in Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Leon Meyer of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Private family committal services with Masonic rites and military honors were held at Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery.
He was born May 12, 1928, in East LaPorte, and was raised and attended school in the Moses Creek area. In 1945, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served until the end of World War II. In 1951 he moved to Washington, and worked for Scott Paper Company as a diesel mechanic for 38 years. He married Joan Jensen June 25, 1955. He hauled cattle, and enjoyed taking horseback trips, hunting and fishing. He was a member of United Lodge #93, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Burlington, Wash., and had been a member of Moses Creek Baptist Church. He was the fourth of six children of the late John J. and Mary Jane Hooper Buchanan.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Jonathan Axel Buchanan; and one great-granddaughter.
Surviving are his wife, Joan Buchanan; one daughter, Julia Ann Sosa of Sedro-Woolley; one son, Fremont Jeffrey Buchanan of Sedro-Woolley; three brothers, John and Claude Buchanan of Brevard, and Huey Buchanan of Sylva; two sisters, Alice Morgan of Klamath, Calif., and Barbara Hipps of Brevard; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Joelle Mathis
Joelle R. Mathis, 49, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Jackson County, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Harrah’s Cherokee Hotel Conference Center.
She was a former vice president of finance for Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Hotel, and held the same position at Harrah’s North Kansas City until she died. She planned to retire to her property on Barkers Creek. She enjoyed needlework, rollerblading, and the outdoors, especially hiking, spending time with her animals and gardening. She was a daughter of Joe Mathis of Wellington, Nev., and the late Eleanor Mathis.
Surviving are three brothers, Richard Mathis of Las Vegas, Anthony “Tony” Mathis of Vermont and James Mathis of Washington.

Skylar Wingate
Skylar Michelle Wingate, 15, of Durham, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was a student at Riverside High School, where she played on the softball team. She also played for the Fuquay Bombs fastpitch traveling softball team. She enjoyed watching the Pirates softball team and spending time with her animals. She was a daughter of Kimberly Lumley Wingate and Robert Lee Wingate of Durham.
Surviving in addition to her parents are two sisters, Jennifer Leathers of Waynesville and Krystal Wingate of Durham; paternal grandparents, Bobby and Jackie Wingate of Durham; maternal grandmother, Violet Lumley of Durham; and maternal grandparents, Harvey and Mary Jo Lumley of Morrisville.

Kenneth Cowan
Kenneth Cameron “K.C.” Cowan, 84, of Fletcher, formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at Elizabeth House Hospice in Flat Rock.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with the Rev. Roger Rearden officiating. Burial was in Shepherd Memorial Park.
He was a native of Webster and served in Europe during World War II with the 66th Division Field Artillery. He was retired from the N.C. State Highway Patrol after 23 years of service in Rowan and Henderson counties. Early in his career he was an officer with the Sylva Police Department. He was a member of the Lions Club of Fletcher and Long Shoals Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Ransom and Bonnie McConnell Cowan.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Sally Cowan Brown; and four brothers, Woodrow, David, George and Bragg Cowan.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Margaret Katherine Russell Cowan; one sister, Pearl Cowan Grogan of Cruso; and one brother, Richard E. Cowan of Asheville.

Alvin Wood
Alvin M. Wood, 82, of Deerfield Lane, Sylva, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with Willard Cox officiating. Burial was in Leoni Cemetery in Woodbury, Tenn., with Willard Cox and Garland Elkins officiating. Military rites were conducted.
A native of Cannon County, Tenn., he had lived in Jackson County since 2001. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired brick mason and woodworker, and a member of Woodland Church of Christ. He was a son of the late Youree and Altie M. Haley Wood.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Trevle Haley Wood; three daughters, Beth Cox of Sylva, Jennifer Steyer of Germantown, Tenn., and Kathy Gulledge of Mabelvale, Ark.; one sister, Laura Parker of McMinnville, Tenn.; one brother, Kenneth Wood of Illinois; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Roberta Farr
Roberta Louise Truman Farr, 84, of Sugar Creek Road, Sylva, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. C.O. “Huey” Stafford officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
She received her MS degree in library science from Western Carolina University and served as librarian for 15 years in the Hall County, Ga., school system. She was a member of the Caney Fork Home Extension and Community Association, and attended John’s Creek United Methodist Church. She was a daughter of the late George Harrison Truman and Roberta Louise Truman.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Quenton Radford Farr, who died in December 2003.
Surviving are one sister, Dorothy T. Bassett of Juliette, Ga.; one daughter, Jean Farr Pittillo of Sylva; one son, James T. Farr of Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
