Commissioners hire coordinator for landfill methane gas project - Commissioners voted Monday (Sept. 19) to hire Timm Muth to serve as coordinator of the beneficial gas reclamation project in Dillsboro. Teenager, toddler die in Saturday accident on U.S. 23-74 east of Sylva - A teenager and her toddler niece died following a two-vehicle accident Saturday (Sept. 17) on U.S. 23-74 east of Sylva. Skylar Michelle Wingate, 15, of Durham, and Leah Leathers, 2, of Waynesville were killed in the 4:40 p.m. wreck, which occurred just east of Balsam Loop Road, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Wike. Wingate was airlifted from the scene to Mission Hospitals in Asheville, where she was pronounced dead, Wike said. Leathers was pronounced dead at Harris Regional Hospital....


School leaders tap Jones to assist superintendent - Steve Jones, who has been serving as director of school improvement for Jackson County Public Schools, has been promoted to assistant superintendent. School board members voted Monday (Sept. 19) to give Jones the title. The assistant’s position has remained empty since Sue Nations became superintendent in November 2003. At the time officials said the decision to not hire a new assistant was a cost-cutting move as part of a restructuring.
