Franklin sweeps SM spikers in three games
Franklin pulled away late in the third game to complete a 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 non-conference volleyball victory over Smoky Mountain last Thursday at Franklin.
The Lady Mustangs (3-5) surged to an 8-1 lead in the third game. However, they didn’t score another offensive point the rest of the way as the Lady Panthers closed the match on a 24-5 run. Sarah Haggard’s serving was primarily responsible for the early lead as she had seven straight points, including four aces. Colleen Davis and Jennifer Webb both had kills in the run.
“Overall I was pleased with the way they played,” Coach Tonya Snider said. “Franklin has a good volleyball program, and they’re always going to rise above their level to play us. We really have to perform in order to compete with them. For the first time in a while I felt we played with them most of the match. The last 15 minutes were very disappointing and frustrating, but until that point I felt we showed up and gave everything we had. They didn’t let Franklin intimidate them. They were ready to play.”
Franklin took a 10-5 lead in game one and maintained that margin the rest of the way.
SM never led in game two although there were five ties. The last was 9-9 after two points by Amy Haggard and Webb’s block. Missed serves accounted for four of Franklin’s first seven points in the game.
Webb finished with nine kills. Sarah Haggard handed out 10 assists, and Kelli Woodard came up with seven digs. Amy Haggard handled 12 of 15 serve receptions.
Sarah Haggard led in service points with seven. Brittany Gilbert was perfect in 11 serves. Team serving was 81.1 percent.
“They served hard and passed well in the first two games,” Snider said. “Brittany did a good job defensively. She had some key digs and served really well.”
The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 0-8 with a 25-8, 25-16 loss.
“Annelise Davis came in to play middle and had an awesome game,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “Shaneka Allen served well and played well on the back row.”
