David Cheatham’s two goals propel Mustangs past Swain
Smoky Mountain’s David Cheatham scored two goals less than a minute apart in the second half as Smoky Mountain (6-2-1) edged Swain 3-1 in a non-conference soccer game on Sept. 14 at Bryson City.
“I thought we did a lot of nice things, and our effort was pretty good,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “Sometimes you can play good and still not score. We just couldn’t make it go in.”

Cheatham took a cross pass from Grant Schallock and scored from 12 yards out to break a 1-1 tie at the 55-minute mark.
Less than a minute later, Cheatham struck again. This time he took a pass from Nils Sager just inside the box and knocked the ball in.
Martin Davis scored SM’s first goal 11 minutes into the contest. J.R. Collins’ throw-in started the play, and Joey Cox headed the ball up. Davis then headed the ball into the net.
Swain’s Luke Macon tied the game by scoring from 15 yards out a minute into the second half.
The Mustangs took 24 shots to Swain’s nine. SM’s Sterling Brady made four saves, and teammate Cody Bryson had two. James Jordan recorded nine saves for the Maroon Devils.
“We dominated the game,” Brown said. “Late in the first half they really surged against us.”
