Woman hospitalized after Saturday wreck

By Carey Phillips

One person was airlifted to Mission Hospitals in Asheville, and two more were taken to Haywood Regional Medical Center following a two-vehicle accident Saturday morning on Skyland Drive.

Brenda Crawford, 51, of Buff Creek Road, Sylva, was traveling east in a 2003 GMC Yukon that was struck head-on by a westbound 1994 Dodge Stealth driven by Christopher Leonard Watson, 32, of Waynesville, according to Trooper Steve Allred of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. near the railroad trestle. The Watson vehicle crossed the center line in a sharp curve and collided with the Yukon, Allred said.

A landing zone was set up near the intersection of U.S. 23-74 and Skyland Drive, and Crawford was airlifted from there to Mission Hospitals. She remained a patient Tuesday, but no information was available on her condition.

Watson and a passenger, 26-year-old Margaret Messer of Waynesville, were taken to Harris Regional Hospital. A hospital spokesman said the two were treated at Harris and transferred to Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A spokesman at Haywood Regional said Tuesday that Watson was a patient there, but no information was available on his condition. Messer was not listed as a patient Tuesday, the spokesman said.

Watson was charged with traveling left of center, according to Allred, who added speed was a factor.
