White wins citizenship award

091505elainewhite
Duke Power District Manager Fred Alexander, left, presents the Duke Power/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Citizenship and Service Award to Elaine White of Cullowhee, second from left, during one of White’s volunteer sessions at United Christian Ministries. White was chosen to receive the inaugural award because of the numerous hours she spends helping to make Jackson County a better place, said Chamber Director Julie Spiro, far right. UCM Director Kathy Cross, third from left, nominated White based on her work with UCM, the Jackson County Christmas Store, Cullowhee United Methodist Church and other civic projects. Also on hand for the presentation were UCM volunteers Linda Fulk, third from right, and Becky Wilson, second from right. Duke initiated the award this year to mark the power company’s 100th anniversary, Alexander said. “On planning ways to celebrate this milestone, Duke Power decided that helping recognize those who mean so much to the communities we serve would be most fitting, and Elaine certainly qualifies,” Alexander said. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
