Travis Brotherton takes meet at West Henderson

Smoky Mountain’s Travis Brotherton won a cross country meet on Sept. 1 at West Henderson.

His time of 16:50 put him on top of the 165 runners.

The Mustangs did not have enough runners to qualify for team standings. Other finishers were Bryan McManus (50th, 20:38), Grayson Cooper (98th, 22:31) and Hunter Thomas (135th, 25:25).

Victoria Palmer paced the Lady Mustangs as she was 15th in 22:34. Rounding out SM’s top five were:

Molly Collins (41st, 24:22); Katie Hayes (94th, 27:42); Emily Butcher (114th, 28:48); and Justin Mathis (126th, 31:03).

The Lady Mustangs finished 10th out of 11 teams in the meet, which drew 149 runners.

“That was a fairly good meet,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “Everyone was ready. We had a lot of runners with personal best times.”

Brotherton placed second among 153 runners in last Thursday’s meet at North Buncombe. His time was 16:53.

McManus was second for the Mustangs, who were 12th out of 14 teams, by coming in 55th in 21:03. Completing SM’s top five were:

Trey Franks (100th, 22:39), Cooper (124th, 23:47); and John Cody (147th, 27:17).

Palmer again topped the Lady Mustangs by finishing 11th among 130 runners in 23:03.

The SM women were 10th out of 12 teams. Rounding out the top five were:

Courtney Spaulding (79th, 27:31); Cadence Railsback (85th, 28:05); Hayes (87th, 28:06); and Butcher (105th, 30:05).

“It was a tough meet,” Hopper said. “It was real hot, but the kids ran hard.”

He noted Railsback did very well in her first meet.

A meet at North Henderson has been added for today (Thursday).
