Fifty-four years ago (top photo), Jackson County was preparing for a weeklong celebration of its centennial as this banner across Main Street proclaimed. Parked cars on the left-hand side of the street are facing the Courthouse, as two-way traffic would continue on the thoroughfare for another five years. Restaurants continue to be a vital part of downtown but gone are the gas stations, drug stores and variety stores that once thrived in the central business district. Maple trees and benches, added as part of the 1998 Streetscape project, are prominent in the recent image (lower photo), and the orientation of the parked cars on the left side indicates Main Street’s current one-way traffic pattern. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
