Suspect behind bars after Sunday vandalism, assault

By Lynn Hotaling

091505martinezA man remained in jail Tuesday (Sept. 13) in the wake of a Sunday morning altercation at the Triple B in Cullowhee.

Manuel Martinez, 29, of Cullowhee, is facing charges of breaking and entering, assault and trespass and is being held in lieu of a $7,000 bond, according to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers received word of an altercation at the gas station at about 10:15 a.m. Sept. 11, Lillard said. A Western Carolina University police officer responded first and found the suspect had fled the scene on foot, Lillard said. That officer got a description of the person the clerk said vandalized the store. The suspect also assaulted the clerk, breaking the clerk’s glasses, Lillard said.

Sgt. John Fox of the Sherriff’s Office spotted a man matching the description walking along old N.C. 107 and arrested him, Lillard said.
