Smoky Mountain booters take victory over Heritage

Smoky Mountain’s soccer team posted an impressive 4-1 non-conference victory over Mountain Heritage on Sept. 6 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

“It was an outstanding win,” Coach Dolphus Brown said “The score was a little surprising. I’m really excited about the progress of the team. They’re starting to jell in a very big way. I thought they would, but I didn’t know it would be this soon.”

He noted the Cougars came into the game with wins over Brevard, Tuscola and Enka and a tie against Christ School.

Coleman Corzine’s penalty kick after a hand ball in the box at the 34:30 mark accounted for the first goal of the game.

The Mustangs went up 2-0 at the 49-minute mark as Joey Cox scored with an assist from Corzine.

“Coleman took a free kick from just outside the box, and the goalkeeper mishandled the ball,” Brown said. “He couldn’t wrap it up. Before he could grab it, Joey tapped it in.”

Heritage cut the gap to 2-1 a minute later as Sam McKay knocked the ball in from 10 yards out after Landon Medina’s corner kick.

Another Corzine free kick was headed in by Grant Schallock for a 3-1 advantage at the 69-minute mark.

“The kick came from the right just outside the box,” Brown said. “Grant was far post about 6 yards out. The keeper came out a little bit, and Grant put it over his head.”

The final goal was scored by Rob Tyson, who blasted the ball in from 32 yards away off a David Cheatham throw-in.

“All four of our goals came off of set pieces or restart type plays,” Brown said.

The Mustangs had an 11-9 edge in shots. SM’s Sterling Brady made six saves, and Johnathan Boone had five for the Cougars.

“We got great team defense all over the field,” the coach said. “Our midfielders handled Medina all night.”

Heritage won the JV game 3-0.
