Mustangs blank Swain

Smoky Mountain blanked Swain 4-0 Sept. 7 in a non-conference soccer game at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

“The biggest challenge for us is Swain was a team we’re expected to beat, and their going to come in with their A game,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “I didn’t think we played very well in the first half, but we played better in the second half.”

The Mustangs opened the scoring 6:45 into the contest as Coleman Corzine dribbled by a pair of defenders. The ball kicked off a Swain player, and Corzine put it into the goal from 14 yards out.

SM led 2-0 at halftime following David Cheatham’s goal after he avoided a defender at the 15-minute mark.

Cheatham scored again three minutes into the second half upping the margin to 3-0.

“It was one of those blood and guts kind of things where David just wouldn’t quit and put it in from 14 yards out,” Brown said.

Joey Cox concluded the scoring with an assist from Grant Schallock at the 52-minute mark.

“Grant made a pass into Joey from the right side,” the coach said. “Joey collected it 2 yards out and kicked it in.”

The Mustangs dominated the action with 30 shots to six by the Maroon Devils. SM’s Sterling Brady made three saves, and Cody Bryson had one. Swain’s James Jordan recorded 19.
